Hi! My name is Kal. I was born and raised in Florida where I also received all of my undergraduate and graduate education. At the University of North Florida (2011-2015), I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish. This experience granted me fluency in the Spanish language. I moved on to pursue a Master’s Degree at the University of Florida (2016-2018), where I completed all graduate coursework in Latin American Studies with a specialization in Latino Studies. Another important part of my background is that I am of North African descent and am fluent in Arabic.
During my undergraduate experience, I tutored English writing with a focus on “multi-lingual learners.” These were students that ranged from high school to Ph. D. level, studying various specializations, and whose native language was not English. Being an English writing tutor gave me the opportunity to help students from Colombia, China, Kuwait, and many more nations with their writing assignments and research projects that were required to be submitted in the English language. It was a wonderful experience! I truly enjoy helping worried students feel at ease and helping them get through the tough assignments all while supporting them in generating confidence and proficiency in English writing.
If the learner of Spanish needs to know one thing about me it is that I, too, was once a learner of Spanish! I never took Spanish in high school! I got into my Beginning Spanish I course through a waitlist! I left my first class completely deflated as I realized that there was a Spanish Alphabet that all my peers were already familiar with and I was completely oblivious to! I had never imagined that I would continue studying the Spanish language, join an honors society, and eventually graduate with a major in Spanish. In fact, during my undergraduate studies, I oftentimes helped my peers understand grammar, memorize vocabulary, and practice for oral exams. I am excited to help you get through your Spanish coursework by using my learner-to-learner approach.
