Hi! I'm Maria, an experienced elementary educator with a passion for helping students grow through individualized instruction. I love tutoring because it allows me to focus on each student's unique learning needs. I adjust my teaching strategies to fit the learner, creating engaging lessons that support academic success in a fun and supportive environment.

I specialize in working with students with diverse learning profiles, including those with IEPs, 504 plans, ADHD, specific learning disabilities, Autism, processing disorders, English Language Learners, and other health impairments. I have extensive experience supporting students with ADD/ADHD and am skilled at using structure, movement, and creativity to help them stay focused and engaged.

My teaching experience includes preschool, second, fourth, and fifth grade, and I’ve worked with students from a wide range of academic levels. I am especially effective in supporting below-grade-level readers and am proud of my success in helping them build confidence and improve their skills. I believe reading should be enjoyable and create games and activities that make it exciting and accessible.

I also have a strong passion for teaching math and science. One of my proudest accomplishments is being selected as a Teacher-Ranger-Teacher by the National Park Service. In that role, I co-developed a four-day summer science camp for Prince William Forest National Park, now used for students in grades 4–7.

No matter what subject or skill your elementary or sixth-grade student needs support with, I bring patience, experience, and enthusiasm to every session. I strive to make learning meaningful and enjoyable for every child I work with.

Wonderful tutor

Maria has been tutoring my son for several years. She is patient, intelligent and is always able to communicate effectively with him. Her manner of teaching is engaging and she keeps my son interested in the topic at all times. Maria always seeks to challenge his potential by frequently asking thought provoking questions. His test scores have soared to the highest percentile since she has been working with him. Maria had my highest recommendation!

Amazing elementary school tutor for Reading, Math and Writing

Maria worked with both of my kids (ages 6 and 7) for a full year during the pandemic to supplement their education while they were in distance learning. She is hands down AMAZING! She worked with my son who was in kindergarten on reading and math. She is incredibly patient, knows how to engage kids at their level, is a great listener and is super attuned to her student. From her lessons, even I learned useful skills on how to engage the kids when they are frustrated and re-direct their attention when their distracted. She has a very supportive demeanor and ends the lessons with a fun game to build rapport with her students. She would both introduce new topics but also capitalized on their interests to find learning tools or readings that they were interested in. My daughter started working with her in the summer to bolster her writing skills. Maria was able to turn something that was very challenging for my daughter to something that she became proud of doing. After every lesson, Maria would write up what they worked on during the session and how each kid was progressing. Those write ups were incredibly useful for me as the co-teacher for my kids during the distance learning period. We are SO grateful to have Maria's educational support during this past year. My kids ended the year with a huge sense of accomplishment in part because of her individualized support.

Very knowledgeable and patient.

My daughter was engaged with her. She got my daughter to want to do more schoolwork, and my daughter continued without me prompting her on to the next subject. I did a double take on my daughter, "did she just go and start on her next subject without me reminding her to do so?" WOW!!!

Wonderful tutor

My child says, "Maria is nice" ; "She likes to play learning games." "She likes to help me read." The first session we had with Maria, she made an appropriate assessment of my child learning needs and gave suggestions of things to do help improve her reading ability. Maria is caring and patient.
