About Allison

Bio

As both a social worker and a certified ESL/ESOL instructor, I bring a unique approach to tutoring. An effective tutor not only knows the subject matter, but also understands the student. Not just their preferred learning style, but what motivates the student and will really help them learn. Having been a social worker for almost 20 years, I know the questions to ask the student to best understand them and their needs. The subject matter, like ESL/ESOL, is always the same. Every student is different so "one size" does not fit all!

My undergraduate major was sociology. I have a Masters in Social Work and am certified to teach ESL/ESOL. I am also certified to teach TOEFL preparation. I have done classroom teaching with children/teenagers in standard English-language curriculum and ESL/ESOL teaching with adults. In addition, I have worked as a 1:1 tutor with both children and adults. As a social worker, I have a passion for helping people - teaching is another way of helping people grow and learn.

I received my ESL/EFL certification in 2012 and have been teaching/volunteering with ESL/ESOL education since then. I have worked with students of all ages and varying backgrounds - from basic literacy ("A is for Apple") to a foreign-trained physician preparing for her US medical exams. While grammar and language fundamentals are important, I always stress conversation as part of my lesson plans. Most people learning English want to learn it to be able to communicate with others, so I try to understand my student's conversational needs and help them focus on that.

I have a flexible schedule and am willing to work around my students' needs regarding work, child care, or other schedule demands. Feel free to contact me to discuss your educational needs. I look forward to helping you!

Elementary (K-6th)

While I have a Master's in Social Work (MSW) and a Master's in Public Policy (MPP) I do not have a formal education degree, yet. I have worked with many K-6 students, specifically as a: Family Trainer for the Maryland Program for Children with Autism, a substitute teacher in public/private schools, a tutor at a for-profit enrichment center (Kumon) and spent 18 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing therapy and educational support services for children, adolescents, and young adults. In Fall 2020 I will be beginning the Master's in Teaching ESL program through the University of Virginia where I will gain the formal/theoretical knowledge to complement my practical teaching/tutoring/educational support experience. Yes it will be my 3rd Masters degree but I believe in lifelong learning!
TOEFL

TOEFL

I have been teaching ESL since 2012 with a specialization in TOEFL preparation. I work with many adults on both conversational English and English for business and professional purposes. I have 2 Master's degrees so I am well versed in academic writing and English for academic purposes as well. I tailor my lessons to each student's unique needs so they can get the most for their money and time with me!

Great match

Alison is easy to connect with both as parents and student. She’s very thorough and amazingly result oriented. She’s not just about finishing up her class put the check mark and look for the next session! But rather she comes offering her researched references for extra assistance and any possibility that your child might experience even faster or more encompassing improvement in their education in general sense. Our family is very greatfull for the quality of her teaching and her genuine and generous care.
