About Sara

The formalities: I have been tutoring professionally in the Hampton Roads area for over five years, and I worked as a peer tutor in both high school and college. I also taught algebra 1, pre-calculus, and personal finance at a private high school in Norfolk, VA. I graduated from Columbia University with a degree in economics and from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William & Mary. with a Master's degree in Marine Biology. I primarily have worked with adolescents and teenagers who are struggling with math and science. I have experience tutoring: biology, chemistry, earth science, prealgebra, algebra, geometry, algebra 2/trig, precalculus, and statistics. I am also trained to help younger children struggling with reading.

The good stuff: I believe math is a subject that--barring particular learning disabilities--everyone can conquer. The trick is to find the right method of explanation that works for you. Too often kids skate through one class and end up in the next without the necessary tools--and that's where I come in. As for science, I hope to spend the rest of my life devoting myself to the study of biology and chemistry. The passion and excitement I feel for the material is contagious. I strive to create a safe environment where my students are not scared to be wrong or look dumb, from there we can build their confidence and their knowledge.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
