Columbia University (Economics)
Virginia Institute of Marine Science, William & Mary (Master's)
The formalities: I have been tutoring professionally in the Hampton Roads area for over five years, and I worked as a peer tutor in both high school and college. I also taught algebra 1, pre-calculus, and personal finance at a private high school in Norfolk, VA. I graduated from Columbia University with a degree in economics, and I am a Master's candidate in Marine Science at William & Mary. I primarily have worked with adolescents and teenagers who are struggling with math and science. I have experience tutoring: biology, chemistry, earth science, prealgebra, algebra, geometry, algebra 2/trig, precalculus, and statistics. I am also trained to help younger children struggling with reading.
The good stuff: I believe math is a subject that--barring particular learning disabilities--everyone can conquer. The trick is to find the right method of explanation that works for you. Too often kids skate through one class and end up in the next without the necessary tools--and that's where I come in. As for science, I hope to spend the rest of my life devoting myself to the study of biology and chemistry. The passion and excitement I feel for the material is contagious. I strive to create a safe environment where my students are not scared to be wrong or look dumb, from there we can build their confidence and their knowledge. I found Sara’s tutoring to be immensely helpful in covering the material that my daughter needed to understand. Her teaching style is very friendly and easy to follow. I’m glad my daughter learned a lot through her tutoring services, and highly recommend her.
Sara really helped my daughter to pick up on the concepts of chemistry she was missing in class. Great pace and demeanor! She was on time, friendly and had a great way of explaining difficult concepts.
Sara met with my daughter for a high school chemistry tutoring session. She enjoyed the session and felt it really helped. The test was this morning and she thinks she aced it! Two thumbs up!
Sara is a great math tutor. She helped me to finally understand word problems. I needed her to help me with a test I was taking and after tutoring with her, I actually knew 90% of the material. She has to be the best, because she taught me word problems and that is major accomplishment. She even took the time out to find material about my test so she could have an idea of what to teach me and what I was up against. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for taking the time with my daughter. She told me in caps through a text that you were an " Amazing tutor " and for me to relax she is in great capable hands!! She also mentioned that for the first time she is very confident she can receive the knowledge she needs to succeed. I am grateful for your patience and complete follow through with my daughter. I will rest easier knowing she is receiving the help she needs to see through the next 4 years. Hopefully - you will continue helping her as long as she needs.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
