Peter S. has been an ESL teacher for over 18 years. He has taught students of all ages from over 50 different countries. Most of his teaching experience has been with adults in the classroom, but he has had quite a lot of online experience since 2020. Students have been of varying levels, from almost no English to those preparing for graduate school. Courses he has taught covered conversational English, pronunciation, business English, and grammar. Peter believes the main goal of a teacher should be to keep students interested and motivated. He does this by giving them enough challenge so that they feel accomplished once they succeed, but not so much that they feel overwhelmed. He approaches teaching from a communicative approach. Even when teaching grammar, effective communication is the focus.
Peter has an undergraduate degree in German and International Studies. Having a keen interest in studying languages other than English has given him a keen understanding of how English works and also what the student's perspective on language learning is. He also has done graduate work in applied linguistics to earn a TESOL certificate - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. In addition, he has studied computational linguistics, which is the study of using computers to process human language.
