Hello. I am a veteran of both the Army and Air Force. I enlisted in the Army and later entered the Air Force as an officer. As such, I passed both the enlisted test for the Army, and the officer test for the Air Force. Although the enlisted test has changed since I took it, the principles of basic reading, writing, and Math have not. I have tutored on the ASVAB before and found it to be similar to GED tutoring. With the right manual,i.e. Barron's etc, I can assure my student that he or she can pass the test. It just takes some studying and a commitment to do the work. I would consider it a privilege to help someone pass the test and serve our country.

I have taught foreign students for many years. I taught Honduran students in Honduras for two years and was very successful. Minor adjustments in the class room such as speaking slowly, using common words, looking at the students when talking to them, and writing instructions on the board are very important. In addition to teaching Hispanic students, I have also lived abroad in Korea, Japan, and the Philippines for eight years. Having experienced these cultures makes me effective with students from those countries, too. I have a heart for foreign students and,"go the extra mile" to help them be successful in the class room. I know first hand how frustrating it can be to learn a second language, and this helps me empathize with ESL students.

I have taught special needs students for three years, working with emotionally disturbed students, in particular. I worked for those three years, 2003-2006,as a certified full-time teacher in public schools. Since then, I have worked part-time with learning disabled, ADHD and OHI students. I adapt my teaching style to the needs and accommodations of my students. I explain things to them in different ways, in an effort to get them to understand and learn. When a student does not succeed, I try to figure out what I can do differently to help them succeed. As long as they give a good effort, they are always successful with me.

Effective and relatable

Jim did a wonderful job tutoring our eighth grader in algebra. He taught her ways of doing algebra that made it easier to understand. He’s also very kind and good natured and kept her focused. We plan on hiring him again .

Great, positive Spanish Tutor

My 13 year old son met with Jim virtually to go over a chapter in Spanish 1. Immediately my son was comfortable with JIm. Jim was positive and engaging.
