I am currently attending the University of Virginia for a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. I also work a full-time job as an Electrical Engineer at Virginia Diodes and I have passed the FE: Electrical & Computer Exam. I am a 2019 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, majoring in Applied Math and Mathematical Economics. I have been tutoring grades 6 - 12, College level courses, and adults in training since 2017. I have worked as a data analyst at an environmental consulting firm, and as an electrical engineer in power and building design. I have also participated in engineering the electrical foundation for the Solar Car team at UVA. I have three years of experience with written and spoken Mandarin Chinese. Having been tutoring for so long, I have refined and perfected my mathematics skills. Being an Applied Math Major, I have a deep understanding of mathematics down to the most basic level, so I will be able to quickly identify any troubles a student may be having. Being an Electrical Engineering major, I have the knowledge of how mathematics and physics apply to the real world.

My main goal is to help students not only learn troublesome material, but to really understand it. I am extremely versatile in my tutoring strategies, and will make lessons completely customized for each student. I am able to quickly pinpoint problems students are facing. Math and physics are frustrating, as I have had my struggles with both subjects in the past. My struggles have made me excellent at helping students navigate through the difficulty and come out even stronger on top. Most importantly, I like to make tutoring fun, since students tend to learn more when the learning is enjoyable.

Please don't hesitate to contact me for any assistance. I am quick to respond to any questions about scheduling lessons. With me, there is no such thing as a bad question, as we have all been in the same position at one point. Learning should be fun, and if it doesn't seem to be, you haven't found a tutor like me!

Statistics

Statistics

I am able to break down the fundamentals of statistics into its core sections: calculation, theory, simulation, and interpretation. Statistics is a subject that pulls together many other fields, and actually uses much less math than people would think. I teach students how to both understand and interpret results as a teacher, professor, or boss would ask for. Statistics and data analysis are tools of the future.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is the basis of all mathematics. In order to have a strong understanding of further topics, one must first understand the fundamentals of algebra. I have been tutoring the subject since 2017, giving me time to refine and perfect my algebra skills. To this day, it continues to consistently be the biggest point of trouble for math with students of all ages, and I am here to minimize that trouble.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra is the basis of all mathematics. In order to have a strong understanding of further topics, one must first understand the fundamentals of algebra. I have been tutoring the subject since 2017, giving me time to refine and perfect my algebra skills. To this day, it continues to consistently be the biggest point of trouble for math with students of all ages, and I am here to minimize that trouble.
Calculus,

Calculus

Beginning in 2015 with AP Calculus in high school to Calculus III in college, I have had plenty of time to refine my understanding of the subject. I am extremely good at pinpointing the specific issues students may have, and I am able to explain the concepts of the subject down to its fundamentals. Being an applied math major, calculus is a huge portion of what we do, since it has applications in so many different fields.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry is a basis of all math, and is used as a topic in nearly every mathematical subject. Because of this, I have studied geometry down to its fundamentals in order to increase my understanding of other subjects as well.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Algebra is the most important topic in mathematics. Most complex math learned in later years expects students to have a solid and deep understanding of algebra. This also means that prealgebra is just as important. I am able to explain the subject in extreme detail, and will be as patient as the student needs to understand each topic. Because the topic is so important, I strive to ensure that the student doesn’t only learn, but completely understands as well.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

Calculus is one of the fundamental topics of all mathematics, so understanding pre-calculus is just as important. I have assisted many students in understanding that pre-calculus is mostly algebra combined with the complexities of the theories of calculus. I will help provide students with the preparation they need to succeed in pre-calculus and beyond.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

The SAT is different than most tests in that one must understand math on a fundamental level to succeed at the test. I train students to think differently about the subject specifically for this test. The SAT also has a huge time constraint, so I have made my lesson strategy to help students think quickly about what type of question they are answering. I want to ensure that during the test, the students are answering the questions both quickly and properly.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is required heavily in algebra, geometry, and calculus. Especially in high school, the subject isn’t taught heavily enough, so many students are left frustrated. There are few fundamental rules of trigonometry to understand, so I will help fill in the blanks with what students are required to know.

The way I tend to tutor the PSAT is to take SAT questions from study guides and ramp up their difficulty. It may be frustrating at first, but I’d like the student to be able to attack the SAT thinking it’s way easier than what they were studying previously.

Very knowledgeable tutor!

Great session, my daughter was able to understand the way he explained it. It was a different approach from her Honor's Precalculus school teacher that she was able to fully understand. Will definitely use again, this was her first session. Thanks Leonard!

Wow!!

My son was tutored by Leonardo last night in stats, a subject that has been very difficult for him. He had a test today and scored a 97, which he has never done before. My son gave all the credit to his new tutor. He was amazing and we are happy. My son said that he was able to perform in the test based on Leonardo’s tutoring.
