Don is a full time tutor with a multidisciplinary background in earth science and mathematics. He holds a BA in Mathematics, and earned his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Geology. His PhD research integrated quantitative models of chemical growth zoning and diffusional modification of major element profiles in metamorphic garnet and rotating rigid ellipsoidal clasts in a flowing viscous matrix with more traditional field and laboratory techniques to elucidate the timescale and detailed path rocks took through the crust during mountain building processes that formed of a portion of the northwestern Indian Himalaya.

Don currently tutors a broad range of geology and mathematics subjects, from high school to graduate-level coursework, including all levels of calculus, differential equations, dynamical systems, linear algebra, and other topics. He has extensive experience helping students master difficult concepts, develop strong problem-solving skills, and build confidence in their abilities. Additionally, he has guided many students through AP Calculus preparation, and occasionally assists with standardized test prep.

Don enjoys taking a collaborative approach in his tutoring sessions, working together with his students to find solutions rather than lecturing. He excels at making abstract concepts clear and applicable by taking a personalized approach tailored to each student's individual needs. Whether you're looking for support with coursework, exam preparation, or simply a deeper understanding of science and mathematics, Don is dedicated to helping you achieve your academic goals.

Calculus

Calculus

I have 10 years of experience tutoring calculus. I've tutored differential, integral, multivariable, and vector calculus (i.e., Calculus 1, 2, and 3) at both the high school and college level. I am also very familiar with both AB and BC AP Calculus. Calculus is truly one of my favorite subjects to tutor! I can help students at any skill level. We'll not only go over calculus material, but also review key concepts needed to succeed in calculus, test prep strategies for the AP exam, and useful calculator tricks. Every student learns differently, so if one method doesn't work there is always another way. I do my best to make the sessions both educational and fun!
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Differential equations is my favorite subject and I've enjoyed tutoring this material for over 10 years. I've helped students master all the standard techniques that appear in a first course, such as using integrating factors, finding clever substitutions, methods for solving Bernoulli and Ricatti equations, the method of undetermined coefficients, variation of parameters, Laplace Transform techniques, series solutions, and numerical methods, and of course systems of first- and second-order ODEs. I've also supported undergraduate and graduate students in more specialized courses focused on qualitative methods used for studying dynamical systems that arise in many applied fields as well as pure math. ODEs arise in virtually every field of the natural and even social sciences. I find that the opportunities to make deep connections to other courses such as multivariable calculus and linear algebra lead to many "ah-ha" moments, and I really enjoy pointing out these connections to students.
Mathematica

Mathematica

Professional and recreational Mathematica user for over 20 years. Written and published Mathematica code (packages) for scientific projects published in international research journals. Experience teaching basic use of Mathematica software to college and high school students for calculus and differential equations courses.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have 10 years of experience tutoring precalculus. I've tutored precalculus at both the high school and college level. I am also very familiar with AP Precalculus. Precalculus is one of my favorite subjects to tutor! I can help students at any skill level. We'll not only go over precalculus material, but also review key concepts needed to succeed in precalculus, test prep strategies for the AP exam, and useful calculator tricks.
