I have taught and done research in physics for decades, working on black hole properties, astronomical observations, aerospace applications such as launch vehicles and satellites, and a variety of other multidisciplinary areas. Over the years, I have worked at or with major corporate labs, national labs, and universities, supervising graduate students and junior researchers and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level. For the past decade I have focused on teaching, in the fall and spring terms, the core university undergraduate calculus-based physics courses, classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics (relativity and quantum mechanics). In my classes I place heavy emphasis on data analysis and visualization of laboratory data, using MATLAB, which I have been using since its inception. I am currently working on a handbook for MATLAB-based data analysis, numerical computation, and visualization of physics concepts and laboratory data.

I have long been holding office hours online to which my undergraduate students come to work through homework problems or analysis of lab data using MATLAB. I guarantee my students that if they attend such sessions, they will leave knowing how to work any problems they bring to it and be able to turn their work in on time. I nominally schedule each online student session for two hours, but I spend as much time as it takes to find the way they understand how to solve the problems they had.

I understand that time is a limiting resource for students and when I work with a student I focus on finding the best and fastest way they can understand how to do physics. All students do not have the same backgrounds, experience, or approach to solving problems, but I have long experience helping students of all levels find the path to doing physics (and the math involved) that works for them. Ultimately you, the student, must be able to do it, but I can help you capitalize on your strengths and succeed.

Data Analysis

Data Analysis

I have analyzed data for over 40 years, including lab experimental data, observational astronomy data, outputs of complex computational codes, and data from field tests of communication, missile, and satellite systems. I have used Fortran codes and special packages such as S, SPSS, SAS, and particularly MATLAB, and have written hundreds of MATLAB apps to analyze and visualize phenomena and data. I teach data analysis and visualization of experimental data using MATLAB at the university level, for which I am currently writing an undergraduate level handbook.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have used MATLAB since the 1980s, before it was called MATLAB and was just some matrix inversion packages. I have used it and published extensively results computed with it. I currently teach it in my physics classes and am writing a handbook on data analysis and visualization in MATLAB. Also I have developed many MATLAB apps for the classes I teach that visualize concepts and allow students to interactively explore physical and statistical concepts. I have worked with MATLAB for over 40 years, teach it in my classes.

Amazing AP Physics Teacher

An absolutely outstanding physics tutor! My daughter (a junior in high school) had been struggling with key concepts in AP physics, and after just a few sessions with Frank, her confidence and understanding have grown tremendously. He explains complex ideas in a clear and patient way, breaking them down into simple steps and real-world examples that really click. What stands out most is his ability to adapt to her learning style, check for understanding, and encourage her to think critically rather than just memorize. He is reliable, professional, and genuinely invested in her success. We’ve already seen noticeable improvement in both her grades and her confidence. I highly recommend Frank to any parent looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, and effective physics tutor!"
