Following a career in higher education, I began substitute teaching, tutored in the No Child Left Behind initiative and tutored writing at a community college. My undergraduate degree was in English and in several professional positions my responsibilities included writing, proofreading and editing the work of others. I was also responsible for content of newsletters.
Seeing the light of understanding shine in a student's eyes is immensely gratifying. Equally important is helping students recognize their potential and hone their skills as they gain self-confidence. An initial challenge with each new student is always to identify methods that work best for him or her and then providing helpful feedback.
Experience! I have been a writer, coached others in writing styles, demonstrated grammatical concepts, proofread and edited in a variety of settings and subjects. Education: my undergraduate degree was in English; other degrees are in sociology and adult education. I've always been fascinated by words and remain curious about our often-illogical English language.
I have worked in grades K-12, with traditional college-age students and with mid-life adults terrified about the concept of mastering English-related skills that will allow them to pursue a long-postponed dream career. What else would you like to know about me? Let me hear from you about the possibility of working together toward your goals.
