Hi, everyone! My name is Sonya and I'm an experienced instructor and tutor. I received my Bachelor's from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Go, Badgers!) and my Master of Fine Arts from Virginia Tech. I've taught at institutions and universities such as Johns Hopkins University, Virginia Tech, the University of Texas at Austin, and Ripon College. Additionally, I have my CELTA certification, accredited through Cambridge University, with an esteemed Pass B.

As an instructor and tutor, I've reviewed high school and undergraduate students’ English composition essays and creative writing pieces, designed and taught my own English and Creative Writing courses, created individualized strategies to enhance students’ writing, and practiced the English language with ESL students. I balanced each session and/or class with questions and carefully crafted lesson plans to help bridge the gap between the student’s confusion and their courses. Every week, I was consistently booked with the same returning students.

I create an environment where students of all backgrounds and identities are welcome. I place students’ individuality and personal history at the forefront of teaching, reminding myself that students are individuals, not simply a collective whole. I strive to create a classroom where I not only educate students in the art of writing but also in critical thinking strategies to guide self-exploration. I hope that my students to use their personal histories as a tool to learn more about themselves, the subject of writing, and the world around them.

I believe that my students teach me as much as I teach them. Therefore, I welcome any new resources students and/or parents may have for me. I am easy to reach and always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!

Public Speaking

With 15+ publications and 2+ years of teaching experience, I excel at understanding and utilizing tone, word choice, volume, and audience to captivate, convince, and inform while public speaking. In addition to teaching college-level courses where I coached students how to write, prepare for, and give presentations, I also have been invited to speak and read for countless literary panels and readings. As an instructor with a writing and publishing background, I go beyond simply telling someone what it takes to be a great public speaker and go the extra mile to support and guide students to a new level of confidence.

Each week, I reviewed undergraduate students’ English composition essays and creative writing pieces, created individualized strategies to enhance students’ writing, and practiced the English language with ESL students. I balanced each half-hour or hour-long session with questions and carefully crafted lesson plans to help bridge the gap between the student’s confusion and their courses. In addition to working with undergraduates, I also helped various graduate students with their project proposals, resumes and cover letters, theses, and dissertations.
