I'm an enthusiastic and passionate teacher/tutor who is a life-long learner and student myself. Because of horrible experiences with a 5th grade teacher who would even spank me for not being able to pronounce words or using my left hand to write, forcing me to switch, I decided I would become a teacher -- the kind she was not. As a result, I'm very caring and encouraging and will not use punitive measures in learning as she did. I want my students to feel cared for and loved most of all and want to see them excel like I was able to do! I want them to love learning and expanding their minds and horizons.
To date, I've earned numerous degrees: an Associates in Business Management, a Bachelor's in English, a Master's in History & Social Sciences, and a Master's in Secondary Education. Through my years of schooling I've become increasingly a better student learning useful strategies -- for testing in particular. I've now graduated with honors a few times! As a young student myself, I had difficulty with reading and generally hated it until I went to a summer reading program at the age of 9 just after 4th grade. I came out of the program reading college level -- in just one summer! Since then, I cannot read enough! So, I love teaching others how to be stand out readers and writers.
I was a tutor in college in an after-school program and with Sylvan for nearly a year and enjoyed those experiences so much that I enjoy tutoring on the side. I am also a licensed teacher in English and History/Social Sciences. I will give assignments, give lots of feedback, and give occasional assessments.
I studied abroad myself twice and have traveled in 24 countries and 48 states and love to bring those experiences into my teaching/tutoring.
I am generally available between the hours of 12 noon - 8 pm Mon - Fri. I will also consider weekend hours if we cannot find time during the week to meet. I will meet with you in your home or in a public library. I will drive within a 35 mile radius from Lynchburg.
