I'm Tom and I've been teaching High School Science for over 25 years. I have bachelors degrees in Science Education and Chemistry and a masters degree in Science Education. I've worked in a variety of public and private schools in online and in-person settings. I've also worked in 2 year and 4 year colleges so I understand the depth of understanding students need to develop to continue strongly in future courses and programs.
My primary specialization is Chemistry that includes 15 years of teaching AP Chemistry. I can also support students in algebra-based Physics and Physical Science. My favorite part of all courses is working with labs to collect and analyze the data driving the relationship students are studying (graphs are where the Laws emerge). I promote spreadsheet use in my courses and can support students using spreadsheets in theirs.
As a teacher, students' mastery of the concepts has been my primary goal and I've developed a deep toolbox of techniques that include simple demonstrations and vetted examples to help students understand the concept being taught as well as prepare them to display their mastery via well written lab reports and assessments. Knowing the content and communicating that understanding can be two very different things and my one on one work with students emphasizes that students can clearly share what they've learned.
