Hi, I'm Katherine! I'm a mathematician with 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring math.
In graduate school, I held weekly group tutoring sessions for classes like calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. I was also a private tutor on the weekends for middle and high school students as they learned algebra, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus. I even tutored one now-famous child actor on set while acting in his first movie. I loved helping them all build confidence, learn to own the material for themselves, and succeed academically.
Whether you are feeling lost and simply trying to survive algebra or whether you have your sights set on an advanced degree, whether you are a movie star or just like the rest of us working hard to get where you're going, you are equally deserving of my time and my patience. My approach is to create an environment that is welcoming for you, then prioritize true understanding over memorization or gimmicks.
As a math professor I help students one-on-one in office hours every day. But I also drop by the tutoring centers on campus regularly to see if anyone, whether my student or not, would like help. When schools were online during the pandemic, I volunteered my time to any K-12 kids struggling to learn math, using online tools like Lucid Whiteboard and Desmos. I am deeply invested in making math accessible to anyone who wants to learn.
My math degrees are a B.A. from St. Olaf College and a Ph.D. from Rice University. Since then I have done a research postdoc at Columbia University, taught at Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, and worked on education policy in the U.S. Senate. My favorite policy deep dive was learning how computer-adaptive tests ensure access and fairness for students with disabilities.
In addition to the courses named above, I also teach a lot of combinatorics, probability, proof-writing, and data analysis. I look forward to working with you, wherever you are in your math journey!
