About Christina

Bio

My teacher handed me the Iliad when I was fourteen, and I hated it. Eight years and two full tours of the Great Books later, I had learned to like the Western Canon but not how to understand or study it. I still felt like a person at a feast with a stuffy nose. Then I got hired to write Literature class plans and suddenly there was no more "try." What happened next was stranger than fiction, but that's a story I'll save for later.

For now, can you relate to my experience? Maybe they...

Maybe they keep telling you "this book is delicious!" but mostly you can't taste it? Or perhaps it seems amazing to you too, but you can't ever get a good grade because you don't know how to explain what you're tasting? Or might you wish that somebody would give you a way to talk about books that doesn't have to begin with your feelings and end with Human Experience? If so, contact me.

I have completed three full tours of the Western Canon and World Literature, as well as two full tours of Western and World History, Government Studies, Religion, and Philosophy. I am also the sole author of a textbook on literature that is presently being used by thousands of high school students around the world. History is my favorite subject. I've taught hundreds of students from kindergarten through adult (and some adult teachers), both online and in local classrooms. Maybe all that sounds impressive, but it is important just because of this: it puts me in a good position to serve you.

I want to understand your goals and then craft lessons that will suit your needs. The humanities are hard but worthwhile subjects. I'd like to help you master them at least and love them at most.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I have been a tutor of ACT and SAT tests for the past four or five years. Specifically, I tutor in reading and writing for these tests. My students have done well in proportion to their efforts, and I am happy to continue to offer tutoring in these areas.
Acting

Acting

I began in theater with a starring role in a school production of Trojan Women at age fourteen, and I continued in theater for the next ten years. I averaged one and a half shows throughout high school and college, so I had tried most theatrical roles by the time I graduated, including auditioning, minor roles, costumes, audio-visual, production, stage managing, character coaching, blocking, and directing. I still love theater and love to teach acting!
American History

American History

I have completed two full tours of American history in my own education, and have also successfully tutored American History at both junior high school and upper high school AP levels. I can help students to master content, and I can help them develop best practices for DBQ's, stimulus-based questions, short answer questions, multiple choice questions, and long essay questions. History is a passion of mine and I love to teach it!
Bible Studies

Bible Studies

I have been studying the Bible more or less continuously for the past twenty years, sometimes as history, sometimes as literature, sometimes through the lens of Hebrew, Greek, or grammar, but always studying it. I have also passed courses in Old and New Testament surveys, and I teach the Bible as Literature to high school students, as well as teaching Sunday School to elementary-aged students.
Classics

Classics

I studied Latin for five years: two in high school and three in college. When I finished, I was reasonably proficient and able to translate from works such as Cicero, Virgil, etc. In addition, I have made a close literary study of the Iliad, Odyssey, and several of the Greek tragedies. I am also thoroughly familiar with Greco-Roman mythology. I have studied ancient history and am familiar with the contexts of the classics from that perspective as well.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

When I was thirteen, my father became a published novelist. He paid me to help translate his novel from dictaphone to draft, and I was hooked on the creative writing process as he discussed his characters, themes, and plot points with me. After I grew up (and got a Literature degree), I became a writing teacher. I love teaching creative writing to students of any age!
English

English

I have taught spoken and written English to Indian and Chinese students of all ages, and to American students all over the country. I teach the English elements of SAT and ACT prep, as well as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, essay composition, creative writing, literature of all kinds, research papers, etc. If it has to do with reading or writing, there is a strong chance that I've taught it!
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

During the summer of my sophomore college year, I was hired to write 300 essays for a curriculum company that wanted to develop some high school essay tests. Five years later, I became a writing teacher, and I've been teaching all kinds of essay-writing to students from ages 12 to adult ever since!
Literature

Literature

I have a B.A. in Literature from a private four-year liberal arts college, as well as ten years of experience designing curriculum and teaching in my field at Jr. High through Adult levels. I am the author of a textbook on the theory and history of literature that is currently used across the U.S. I am familiar with World Literature, European Literature, American Literature, and a certain amount of specialized African American Literature, as well as some American, Bollywood, Korean, Russian, British, and Persian filmography.
Music History

Music History

I have been taught music history at the college level and own materials for teaching music history to others. I also play a musical instrument (the piano) and am well-versed in cultural histories.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have been almost continuously writing and proofing educational materials since leaving college over a decade ago. I have published several books, including a textbook on literature, and I continue to teach writing, literature, history, and SAT prep to this day. I have proofed books for other authors and taught students to proof their own work.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My own education included classical debate, rhetoric, and public speaking. Additionally, I have a BA in Literature and was active in theater productions for ten years. There, I learned how to coach actors and actresses to get the most out of their performances. I also served as a director. I now teach rhetoric and public speaking at the high school level.
Reading

Reading

I grew up in a reading family--I don't think we ever had fewer than 40 boxes worth of books in our house! Now as an adult I love to share my big vocabulary and love of reading with students of all ages. I teach everything from grammar, spelling, and basic reading to advanced vocabulary, literature, and SAT/ACT reading comprehension. It's my favorite, and my hope is that it can become something my students enjoy too!
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I have been an SAT Reading and Writing tutor for almost five years in both one-on-one tutoring and classroom settings. For two years, I also worked with an academy exclusively devoted to SAT preparation (until it shut down due to COVID-19). I have continued to prepare students for the SAT since then with excellent results.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

Five+ years as an SAT Reading and Writing tutor, including 2+ years with Y2 Academy as an SAT prep tutor for Reading and Writing.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

My own college thesis paper ran to 90 pages (double-spaced), and I got an A+ on it. I also developed a taste for thesis writing because it is a unique opportunity to self-evaluate and self-articulate while in the process of mental, emotional, and even spiritual worldview development. Since college, I have worked with many students to develop thesis statements for college applications and sometimes postgraduate applications as well.
United States History

United States History

It has been a great pleasure to teach the story of my country to all kinds of students in America and abroad! I have taught American history to students at young as fifth grade and as old as college juniors. Most live in America, but some are foreign students who want to learn about America. I can teach American History at most levels up to AP, and I have written two books on American history for high school students.
World History

World History

I have completed two full tours of World History in my own education. I have also successfully tutored World History and helped several students to improve their grades at the AP high school level. I can help students to master content, and I can help them develop best practices for DBQ's, stimulus-based questions, short answer questions, multiple choice questions, and long essay questions. History is a passion of mine and I love to teach it!
Writing

Writing

I spent my early career designing, writing, and publishing class plans and textbooks for studies in classical Western Canon literature. I have also edited several now-published works for other authors, and have successfully taught not only English grammar, organization, and style, but also both critical (essays, etc.) and creative writing genres to a number of students who range from elementary age to adult.
