Hello! I am Samantha! I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Mary Washington. I am currently going into my second year of my PhD in Biosciences at George Mason University. After completing my PhD I hope to return to academia as a professor, so tutoring is right up my alley! When I was getting my Bachelor's, I found that the best professors / teachers were the ones that were the most passionate about their subject. I absolutely love talking about and explaining biology, so I hope that will make me a great tutor for you or your student!
Most of my experience tutoring has been pretty informal. I have lead small group discussions with groups of high school / college students to help them breakdown and understand scholarly articles. My other experiences have been teaching data processing and data analysis techniques using R / RStudio and Excel. After the lesson, I would send the students review guides that they could refer to when using RStudio and Excel on their own. Additionally, I was always available by email for any questions the students may have had and I will bring that same mentality for every student I tutor!
Depending on you or your student's needs, I can create lesson plans, visual aids, and provide helpful study techniques. For many students, I find that poor performance in a subject isn't always because they don't understand a topic, but because they have trouble holding themselves accountable to study. For students that need help keeping themselves accountable, I love to make studying into a game because I find this helps make studying feel less like a chore and keeps student's engaged. I hope you will give me a chance to teach you or your student biology!
