During my time in college, I was the pianist at the local orchestra called Valley Chamber Orchestra in Roanoke, VA as well as the staff piano accompanist at a local church. My senior piano recital consisted of virtuosic works by Bach, Rachmaninoff, and Poulenc (French modern composer).
I started to teach piano when I was a freshman in high school due to the demand in my neighborhood back in 2010. My first student was a middle schooler who wanted to learn how to read notes faster. Through teaching him, I developed my own method to teach others how to read notes that is actually faster than what I was taught. Ever since I discovered that, I have been happily teaching my secret to others and seeing their speed in reading music.
My teaching philosophy is to teach with a balance of education and enjoyment. I enjoy helping students learn musical fundamentals such as note reading, theory, sight-reading, ear training, technique, and repertoire building. However, I also like to expand students' understanding of music by teaching composition, improvisation, and ensemble playing so that they can learn how to be creative. This helps put music theory into practice versus just learning textbook examples.
I also teach effective piano practice strategies, methods to read notes faster than the traditional method, and how to prepare musical compositions quickly so that students can have an expansive repertoire. One of my favorite books on the piano of all time is called "Supercharge Your Piano Practice - Learn Piano in Half the Time" by Zach Evans who is a famous piano coach.
