I started tutoring in undergrad with peers and classmates; I had the opportunity to be an undergraduate teaching assistant, which afforded me opportunities then. Then, and graduate school I continued at The Writing Center and tutoring high school students while in graduate school for teaching. In 2015 I earned my teaching certificate, and I landed my first job as an English educator with the public school system.
I have taught grades 9 through 12 as well as freshman composition at the college level. I have tutored for Virginia ELA EOC SOLs, SAT prep, and advanced placement English language and composition. I have six years classroom experience in the high school setting, and eight years of college level experience.
My favorite thing about teaching and tutoring is helping students understand material. If you don’t understand the lesson the first time, then will try it from a different angle. If we don’t like traditional text, then let’s try a graphic novel. If writing is hard, then let’s try speaking instead. Many of my former students report that the reading, writing, and communication skills vastly improved.
I am licensed for 6–12 ELA in VA, but I specialize in test prep for SOLs, AP Lang, and SAT. Additionally, I can do writing or workshops to build skill and confidence.
