Hi, I'm Maria and I am an elementary educator. I am one of Wyzants top 10% Tutors for 2020. Tutoring is where I find gratification in helping students who need extra support to find success. I worked for three years with two foster girls who had academic and behavioral issues and needed to find success in school. They found it working with me from 5th grade into middle school. I love tutoring because I am able to work on the specific academic needs of the student. I adjust the instruction to the specific needs of the student.

My goal is to help students be successful and enjoy learning. I create engaging lessons and use a variety of strategies to support my students. My experience includes working with students with Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), ADD, specific learning disabilities, and other health impairments. I am easy to reach and always provide fast responses. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson.

I use many manipulative in teaching math so that students are able to understand the concept . A variety of strategies are used to support student learning. I have taught second, fourth and fifth grade math in Virginia public schools.

As lead science teacher at my school, I support k-5 science learning. I have taught second, fourth, and fifth grade science. I was selected to be a Teacher-Ranger-Teacher by the National Park Service and co-developed a 4 day science camp that Prince William Forest Park currently uses for fourth through seventh grade students during the summer.

My experience includes working with students from the kindergarten reading level to the middle school reading level. Being an educator I have over 15 years of teaching reading experience. Working with below grade level and readers I am successful at supporting them and having their reading levels increase. Making reading fun and engaging is what makes me successful.

I have over 15 years of working with students identified with ADHD. Some students are medicated and some are not. I am flexible

Very knowledgeable and patient.

My daughter was engaged with her. She got my daughter to want to do more schoolwork, and my daughter continued without me prompting her on to the next subject. I did a double take on my daughter, "did she just go and start on her next subject without me reminding her to do so?" WOW!!!

Wonderful tutor

My child says, "Maria is nice" ; "She likes to play learning games." "She likes to help me read." The first session we had with Maria, she made an appropriate assessment of my child learning needs and gave suggestions of things to do help improve her reading ability. Maria is caring and patient.

Tutor responded:

Thank you. I really enjoy working with your child.

Great, experienced teacher with an immediate connection

Maria worked with our first-grader Pete on his reading, and right away it was clear she knows how to capture and hold the attention of kids his age, but also expertly assess and prescribe the right path forward, depending on where your daughter or son is at. She is an experienced public educator and her years of work in that field are obvious. She's also very warm and nice!

Excellent tutor for reading and English

Highly recommend Maria. She has been helping my daughter with her Reading and Spelling and my daughter really enjoys her classes. I see her also paying more attention to her spelling and reading more fluently.

Patient and enthusiastic tutor

Maria helped my 6yo daughter (not exactly the most eager student) with first grade math. The difference between tutoring with Maria vs. her normal group classwork was night and day. I couldn't recommend her more highly!

Knowledgeable tutor for young kids.

Maria jumped right in with both my kindergartener and 2nd Grader while school is out didn’t to covid. She focused on what we asked, quickly assessed, developed a strategy, and provided extra materials. She communicated very well with us, so we knew what her plan was and how we can best support our kids. She also connected quickly with the kids. Very impressive! Thank you, Maria!
