Hello, and welcome to Tutoring with Briana. I have 7 years of experience teaching students one-on-one in Math and Science. I specialize in math, having spent most of this time getting students ready for the SAT and ACT, and helping them with Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. I can help students understand concepts, and get the grades they want. My own background is in Science. I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the State University of New York College at Oneonta.

As your tutor, I will use the curriculum and notes taken in class as the guideline for what material to teach. After discussing with the student and his or her parent where the struggle seems to stem from, we can proceed. We will build up the knowledge that the student needs to succeed. We will approach problems in multiple ways, and the student will teach back to me what he or she has just learned, so that I can address precisely the concepts that he or she is finding difficult. I want to make the information “click" in my student’s head as much as possible, because math builds on its self. I know the importance of getting a good test score to bring up a class grade, so when I come in to help, this will be the goal.

Success on ACT and SAT is entirely dependent on the level of preparation. The best remedy for test anxiety is knowing what is coming. I will teach your student to take the test. Come test day, there will be no surprises, we will have covered the material, learned the strategies, and mastered the skills needed to get into that dream college.

Cancellation Policy:

1. I prefer a days notice for cancellations and reserve the right, after 6 pm the day prior to the scheduled lesson, to assess a ancellation fee equivalent to 30 minutes of instruction.
2. Cancellation with less than 6 hours notice will be charged the equivalent of 1 hour's instruction.
3. A lesson cancelled with less than an hour's notice will be charged the full value of the lesson.

ACT English

My training in this subject includes one national chain of tutoring centers and one local tutoring business as well as my own personal lesson plans. The ACT has not changed much since it's inception making it a predictable, teachable test. The English section is a grammar and writing test, an area I scored nearly perfectly on when recently re-testing myself. We will use supplemental materials, homework assignments and practice tests in order to cover the content, timing, and strategy for this test.

I have 3 years experience with ACT and SAT preparation, at all levels of ability. I have worked with students attempting a perfect score, and those who need assistance with years of academic content, and every level in between. I work at a student's own pace and customize a lesson plan. Together we develop just that: a plan for the best score possible.

ACT Reading

All sections of the ACT can be mastered with the right preparation. Strategies for the Reading section include knowing the types of questions, the passage formats, and time saving techniques. I have 3 years of experience prepping students of all skill levels for the ACT English, math, reading and science, as well as the essay.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I have been tutoring for ACT Science for close to three years. The science section of the ACT is more about reading comprehension than scientific knowledge (although my bachelor's degree in biology does help!). We will learn the types of questions you will see on ACT Science sections using practice tests, and I will show you how to interpret the questions to quickly and accurately move through this section.
Algebra 1

Algebra I is the foundation for all of the math classes yet to come, so it is important to understand the fundamentals. I have been tutoring Algebra I for close to three years. I can help you to not just memorize endless formulas but to actually understand why these math facts are true, so that they make sense to you.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra is the threshold to all advanced math, which is why it is my specialty. My Algebra II expertise is in functions, factoring, complex numbers, logarithms, exponential functions, rational equations, and more. There are several ways to approach many Algebra II concepts, so notes from class are important! That said, this also means that we can find a way to make Algebra II make sense to you.
Chemistry

Chemistry

High school chemistry is a math-heavy and concept-heavy course, and each unit builds on the last. Since it's generally easier to keep up than catch up, I try to make sure my students have a firm grasp of each concept before we move on. However, even if it's the day before the test I can help. I have a methodical strategy for mathematical side of the class that my students have had great success with.

Geometry

Whether planar, coordinate, or advanced, geometry finds its way into most math classes, from Algebra to Trig. That is why it is so important to have good geometry skills. This also means that weaker algebra skills will affect your success in geometry. We will take a comprehensive approach to geometry, making sure you not only get great grades on the next test, but build a foundation for the material yet to come.

I have a science background, having majored in Biology. I have taken up to Calculus, and now teach in a national chain of tutoring centers helping students catch up, keep up, and get ahead in Pre-calculus.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The SAT was redesigned in 2016 to include longer sections and a math component for which a calculator is not allowed. I have been tutoring for this test since that redesign and have become an expert on SAT-style questions. Whatever a student's skill level, strategy is a major factor in maximizing SAT scores. To that end, I design an individualized curriculum for your student that is based on his or her skill level and score needs. We will use College Board's released tests as well as supplemental lessons and materials to work up to your student's highest potential.
SOL

SOL

The Virginia SOL tests for Algebra, Geometry, and Chemistry are challenging standardized tests, particularly for students who struggled through their coursework. I have helped several students prep for retakes of failed SOLs from previous years. I can also help a student currently enrolled in one of these classes prep for the timing and unfamiliar content of these tests.
