About Shena

Bio

As a classroom teacher of over 31 years, I introduced a lot of hands-on activities to my students. I truly believe that students can have fun while they are learning mathematics! I have used online resources as well, constantly searching for interactive and engaging sites for my students. As a classroom teacher of over 31 years, I introduced a lot of hands-on activities to my students. I truly believe that students can have fun while they are learning mathematics! I have used online resources as well, constantly searching for interactive and engaging sites for my students. My teaching experience includes instruction in Math 7 and 8, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra I as Math is my major content area. I have, however, also taught English 6, Social Studies, Civics, and Geometry in the Middle School setting.

I have also had the pleasure of teaching and tutoring Consumer Math, Algebra II, Geometry, Statistics, College Calculus, College English, and College Writing. My tutoring has also been expanded to evening sessions for a community church for 2nd – 8th grades in all subject areas. I was an instructor for a Summer School Community Reading Camp and Math Lab. I have also been a Homebound Instructor for high school students as well.

I have several years of experience with online instruction as well. Our students worked with different platforms when the Global COVID-19 pandemic started back in March 2020. I started using ZOOM for face-to-face online sessions, but I have also worked with the Google Meets platform.

The ACT Math test covers Arithmetic, Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, Coordinate and Plane Geometry, as well as Trigonometry. I am able to help with the preparation of this test as I have been able to help students with college prep mathematics tests in the general.
Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra 1 for over 20 years. I am extremely familiar with the concepts. I have always helped my students earn a 95% or higher pass rate on our state's End of Year Course Standards of Learning Tests!! I can help you too.

I haven't had much experience teaching Algebra 2, but I am very knowledgable with the content. (I received a perfect score on the WyzAnt test to be certified in this subject for tutoring)

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education with a Specialty in Mathematics. I have a Middle School Endorsement Grades 5-8. I also have previous tutoring experience with students from Grades 2 through college level Mathematics.

I have had training in Microsoft PowerPoint. I am very knowledgeable in the applications. I know how to insert pictures, sound, and animations. I have created many presentations over the years using this software.

I use Microsoft Word on a daily basis. I create flyers, brochures, and many other forms of advertisements using this software.

I have taught Pre-Algebra for over 15 years. I am extremely comfortable with the new VA standards of learning; I have a high pass rate each year in this content area.

I have taught Math for over 15 years. I have taught Math 7, Math 8, Consumer Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry. I have tutored students working on Geometry and College Calculus.
Spelling

I graduated with an initial degree in Elementary Education. Some of my coursework included lessons on how to teach students how to spell. I am typically a great speller. I would be very comfortable helping students as needed.

Shena was patient, nice, and really took the time to explain things in a way that made sense for my son. She made sure he understood the topic before moving on. She also gave him notes, which are helpful resources to help him remember what was covered.
