I graduated from the University of Virginia with a dual degree in Economics and Computer Science. My penchant for STEM subjects, especially math, began in elementary school and lead me to pursue related fields of study in college. I fell in love with my first college software development class and I saw that many engineering students struggled with this particular subject. The year after I completed the class, I became a volunteer teaching assistant and tutor for the Introduction to Software Development course in the UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science. This is where I first discovered my passion for helping other students succeed and my innate talent for teaching and tutoring.
Upon graduation from UVA, I worked for America Online as a software developer from 1996-2001. I then decided to return to school in 2003 and complete all required coursework to teach secondary mathematics. During this time, I tutored math and test preparation with Dalby Test Preparation in McLean, VA for several years. While tutoring, I discovered my preference for one-on-one teaching over classroom instruction. I recently decided to rekindle my love for teaching math and test preparation by tutoring with Kate Dalby (formerly of Dalby Test Prep) at Inspiring Test Preparation in McLean, VA.
I specialize in teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Since math is a language and requires repetition and practice, I assign additional homework on an as-needed basis to reinforce the concepts the student is working on in class. I like my students to check in with their teachers, and to have an idea of where their curriculum is headed, so that I can introduce new concepts before they go to class. I will periodically review concepts we have already covered to keep them fresh.
Many students are intimidated by math and I want to help remedy that one student at a time. My students all say the same thing; I have an innate ability to explain even difficult concepts in a way that makes sense to them
