Hello, my name is Grant. I have received both bachelor's and a master's degrees in physics. I realized very early on during undergrad that I enjoyed not only learning but also teaching physics, so I sought out opportunities to teach throughout my education. Helping my peers figure out their homework turned into tutoring underclassmen and eventually applying for Learning Assistant and Teaching Assistant positions as I came across them. My university had a pedagogy (learning about learning) course associated with the LA program which exposed me to many different approaches and styles of learning. While these are helpful to be aware of in a classroom setting, I think this knowledge has really shined by being added to my arsenal of one-on-one teaching approaches.
My approach to tutoring is very strongly tailored to the student seeking my help. We always start by determining their current strengths and weaknesses as well as their goals. We then make an attempt to learn something new and assess how this went. If this is successful, great! If not, that is also fine because there are always multiple ways to approach a topic and I have yet to run out of them before a student has grasped a concept.
On top of needing to learn and use these tools for my own education and profession as a physicist, I have also tutored students in a wide array of math subjects. My experience ranges from helping students learn algebra for the first time to learning how to apply calculus in their college course work.
I have over a decade's worth of experience helping others learn physics. I have personally run the gamut of lab courses aimed at the undergraduate level and done one-on-one tutoring work in mechanics, electromagnetism, data analysis, and lab writing. I also have a fairly extensive background in electronics and computational work, though as of yet I have not tutored anyone in these subjects.
Please feel free to ask any questions you might have in order to determine if we are a good fit as tutor and tutee.
Grant has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering 1 question submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.
Intelligent and Teaches well
Teaches and explains well. I’ve learned a lot in our sessions. He is quick to grasp the material I’m working on and my needs. When I struggle with a problem, he thoroughly gone over it so I do understand. His notes are also very helpful.Adam, 26 lessons with Grant
Grant worked with my college sophomore for the past two months in general physics. She got behind and then discouraged. Grant patiently took her through previous material and made sure she understood it fully. They then worked together on each week’s lessons. Grant figured out her learning style and was spot on in his approach. He took time to get to know her, which built trust. The semester ended with a much happier, confidence, and proud student. He was flexible in scheduling and gave her the time she needed. We recommend Grant most highly.Lucy, 13 lessons with Grant
Really helping my child with Physics!
My son has been struggling in IB Physics. Even just after two sessions with Grant, he feels more confident in class. My son says, "Grant is giving me strategies I can use to solve any Physics problem."Joseph, 4 lessons with Grant
The best physics tutor ever!
Grant is so patient and calm, and I value that so much when I am working with a tutor. I don't have the strongest background in physics, but Grant takes the time to ensure you understand the concept, and he breaks it down so well to help you understand the material. I will continue to work with Grant moving forward! Thank you, Grant, I do appreciate all your assistance.Alexis, 5 lessons with Grant
A great physics tutor!
My son was averaging D’s on his physics tests, but after one session with Grant, his next test grade was a B! I think my son finally understood the basics, thanks to Grant. 🎉Tia, 2 lessons with Grant
