Hi! My name is Joya B., and I am a Psychiatric Epidemiologist currently pursuing my PhD at George Washington University. I research global mental health, specializing in cross-cultural manifestations of mood disorders, such as depression. I can tutor high school, college, and post-college students in psychology, epidemiology, biology, and writing.
I love to learn, and I’ve had a fruitful journey within academia. I completed my MPH at Columbia University in Epidemiology with a concentration in Population Mental Health. I also have Bachelor's degrees from the University of Virginia in Cognitive Neuroscience and Global Public Health. Through my rigorous coursework, I have amassed excellent abilities in scientific writing, essay writing, biostatistics, statistical coding, and research design. I know how to help students excel in courses and succeed in undergraduate and graduate admissions.
I also have worked in epidemiologic research since 2018, both in university settings and at the World Health Organization. I continue to analyze large-scale datasets, publish scientific literature, and present my work to a global audience. My ongoing involvement helps me to stay up-to-date in the fields of epidemiology, neuroscience, and psychology. I can help students understand what it takes to work in research, design their own projects, use cutting-edge epidemiologic methods, and develop science communication skills.
I have been teaching courses and tutoring for the past 5 years, and I specialize in teaching psychology, epidemiology, and biology topics. I have extensive experience working as a Teacher's Assistant (TA) in university settings (both undergraduate and graduate), and as a 1-on-1 tutor for college students. I have strong writing and standardized test skills, making me a perfect fit for those looking to improve their test scores or school applications (e.g. GRE, PSAT, SOPHAS applications). I’m looking forward to connecting with new students!
