Hello! I'm Dr. Huaizhong R, a passionate and experienced mathematics educator with a Ph.D. and capable of communicating math at any level, from K-12 math to research in my specialized area. I have over 15 years of teaching and tutoring experience at both high school and college levels, and I specialize in making complex math topics clear, logical, and approachable.

Whether you're tackling Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Statistics, or preparing for AP exams or math competitions, I offer patient, personalized support that meets you where you are. I have taught at universities in the U.S. and internationally, and I understand the challenges students face when learning math—from foundational skills to advanced problem-solving.

My teaching philosophy centers around clarity, encouragement, and deep understanding. I take time to explain not just the "how," but also the "why" behind each concept. My goal is to help students build confidence, master concepts, and develop a lifelong appreciation for mathematics.

I can do both high school math (Algebra I/II, Geometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics) and college math (Calculus I/II/III, Linear Algebra, Real/Complex Analysis, ODEs, Probability & Statistics). I also offer some test prep (SAT/ACT math, AP exams, AMC competitions) with flexible online sessions using clear visuals and step-by-step explanations

If you're looking for a patient and knowledgeable tutor who can help you truly understand math—not just memorize it—I’d be delighted to support your learning journey. Let’s tackle math together!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra I is at the very foundation of all other mathematical subjects. As an math educator, I am very familiar with the contents, especially the part used most frequently in upper level math subjects. Despite the fact that I have not actually taught this part of the math, I am confident that it should pose no challenge when I need to teach it.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

Former mathlete and compitition winner, Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics and former professor at state universities. Extensive knowledge and experience in problem-solving and math competition, including AMC prep. and other high school math competition.
Calculus

Calculus

Calulus is fundamental in understanding both science and engineering as well as more and more other disciplines. As is well-known, the best way to understand something is to teach it. I have taught the whole calculus series (I/II/III) at various institutes in the US and China, including University of Maryland, Tennessee State University, Middle Tennessee State University, and Northern Virginia Community College. I have also worked individually with students on Calculus for more than a decade. Most recently I have been working with students from George Mason University, NOVA, Thomas Jefferson High School, and some other schools.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

Differential equations and dynamical systems are among the major tools I have used extensively in my own work, as well as area of study. On the other hand, I also have taught the subject in both the US and China, to students of various background. In recent years, I have been helping studetns in nearby schools, including George Mason University and Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology. I'm sure my deep understanding and extensive knowledge will help future students develop their math skills as well.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

The knowledge and ideas of discrete math are used extensively in probability and statistics, which is my major in graduate school. My teaching of courses such as Finite Math also involves part of the discrete math contents, including logic, set theory, counting, etc. Based on my experience, I do have the capability to help people on this subject, even though I have not taught discrete math officially. In fact, I have been helping students with discrete math for years, most recently working with students from George Mason University.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

Even though I was trained for advanced math and have taught mostly in college, I had the experience of participating in math competition and maintained my love for doing elementary math. I also taught middle and high school students on various occasions at various institutes. I enjoy solving problems and discussing with others in elementary math frequently.
Finite Math

Finite Math

I had the opportunity to teach Finite Mathematics when I was on the faculty of a state university. It was a two-semester series, of which I taught both semesters. Most of the material overlaps with the basic knowledge required for a Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics, e.g. Logic, Linear Equations, Matrices, Combinatorics, Probability, Markov Chains. I also taught the part involving Linear Programming.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is the only course in school math that initiate the learning of logical thinking better than any other subjects. As a former mathlete and competition winner, I have extensive knowledge and experience in school geometry. In college and graduate school, I learned more geometry at advanced level, such as Analytic, Differential, and Riemannian Geometry. which enhance my understanding of space and structure substantially. As an educator, I have taught geometry to students and high school teachers at various occasions. I have also worked with individual students with geometry in the US and China.
GMAT

GMAT

I scored 92%, 93%, and 96% on Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical sections on my GRE test, respectively. I have all the knowledge and experience needed for GMAT prep.
GRE

GRE

As a GRE exam taker, I scored 92% on verbal, 93% on quantitative, and 96% on analytical sections. Besides my training in college and graduate school focuses on quantitative and critical thinking skills, I also use such skills in my teaching and research extensively. Reading and writing have been an integrated part of my job as an educator.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is one of the most foundational subject for any mathematician/statistician. Not only do I use it in my research frequently, mostly in an implicit way. e.g. representations of groups are extensions of linear algebra to a more general and advanced setting. I have been working with students on linear algebra for years, most recently with students from George Mason University and Thomas Jefferson High School (TJHSST) in Virginia.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra math is at the very foundation of all other mathematical subjects. As an math educator, I am very familiar with the contents, especially the part used most frequently in upper level math subjects. Despite the fact that I have not actually taught this part of the math, I am confident that it should pose no challenge when I need to teach it.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is the preparation for learning Calculus, and focuses on the study of function, including trigonometric functions, as well as discrete structure such as counting, and probability. I have taught both precalculus and calculus at multiple occasions in various institutes, including colleges and universities in both the US and China. In recent years, I have worked with high school students on precalculus quite often. I'm sure my extensive experience in the subject will help my future students just as much.
Probability

Probability

I took probability in college, and also in graduate school. I worked in the area of random (stochastic) perturbations of dynamical systems, which uses probability theory as the main tool in solving research problems. I have taught probability and statistics in college to both undergraduate and graduate students. Most recently, I have helped students from George Mason University with probability.
Real Analysis

Real Analysis

As a Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics, not only did I learn Real Analysis (Measure and Integration) and Probability (Measure theory-based study of probability theory), but I also taught Real Analysis to both graduate and undergraduate students in a state university.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is part of the precalculus in college, which I taught many times. My experience participating in math competition and preparing students for it also makes me quite familiar (and fond of) trigonometry. In addition, I take pleasure in solving problems in trigonometry, especially those related to complex numbers, analysis, and other subjects.
