About Kevin

The past year has been full of life lessons from all around the world. As a traveler, I have been blessed with the opportunity to experience other cultures, and now I am returning back to my hometown to share this enhanced passion for sharing information. I am ready to build new relationships and I love watching my students grow over the course of their academic career.

The relationship between a teacher and the student(s) should be symbiotic. I don’t think my students realize how much THEY are helping ME with my journey. A teacher can learn so much about the art of teaching from just one session.
There is so much more to say, but I guess you want to see my credentials before we get started:

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics/Education (Virginia Tech)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Years of experience tutoring Algebra. I am able to anticipate and locate the source of confusion for specific topics after numerous hours of communicating with a variety of students.

Algebra 2

When I first started off tutoring, I received many requests for Algebra assistance. Through multiple students, I became familiar with the curriculum and know what lessons most students have trouble understanding. Algebra covers a lot of foundation skills, so I recognize the importance of the subject.

Calculus

Back when I was tutoring students at Virginia Tech, there was one semester where all my students were in Calculus I. This allowed me to hone this course. I am still working on my Calc II skills, so if you need help with anything after integration, you may want to consider another tutor!

Elementary Math

The hardest part about tutoring elementary level mathematics is certainly not the content itself, but the explanation. This is where I excel. I have taught kids how to read time on a clock as well as finding proportions between two triangles. I believe this comes from my ability to translate the language of math into casual dialogue.

Football

In high school, I had the pleasure of being part of one of the best football programs in the world. I am able to train and coach wide receivers, running backs, and defensive backs. I can also provide quarterbacks with an opportunity to train with a great, quick receiver.

Geometry

We are constantly surrounded by mathematics and its applications. I love teaching Geometry since this observation can be made directly through the buildings around us and even the table we are working on. Some say you need to have a visual mind to succeed in Geometry, but I offer multiple explanations so that anyone can understand the concepts.

Prealgebra

Students will be using Algebra throughout their high school and college years, so I recognize the importance of having a solid foundation in this subject. This motivates me to thoroughly cover all the topics in Algebra that I know for a fact will show up again in my students' lives. I am able to see the bigger picture so that my students will be successful not only in their current course, but in their future math classes as well.

Precalculus

Precalculus deals with the encompassment of trigonometry, the unit circle, and high-order algebraic equations. For many students, the connection between these concepts may seem nonexistent, but this is where my role as a tutor comes into play. I have the ability to see the bigger picture within the course while also making my teachings relevant for the future of my students.

Soccer

I have 10 years of soccer experience and scouted for travel soccer and all-star teams. I am able to provide ball control drills and coaching tips.

Trigonometry

I took college courses that focused on teaching trigonometry. I know the reoccurring areas that students struggle with and how to handle them. Trigonometry is born from the unit circle, and I'll be able to demonstrate that clearly.

Writing

My earliest memory of teaching takes place in my own home where I taught my younger sister how to read and write. Even though I studied mathematics in college, writing has remained a constant in my life. Whether it be formal essays, journals entries, poetry, or a to-do list, there will always be room to write.

Knowledgeable and Adaptable — Kevin has been the only tutor to help my son succeed in PreCalculus. My son has tried many tutors with no success. My son states that Kevin is able to break down the information in a way that helps him understand it and and a better communicator than his high school teacher. Kevin is awesome! ...
