I am a certified math teacher and experienced tutor, with previous work experience at Fairfax County Public Schools and Potomac Crescent Waldorf School in VA; Wheaton, Warrenville, and Carol Stream schools in IL; and 20 years of home-schooling. I'm a mother of five, who loves children and whose greatest joy is working one-on-one with people to help them realize their full potential. I have a BA (magna cum laude) in elementary education and have recently taken nursing pre-requisites (4.0 GPA) as well. I have over 25 combined years of teaching public school math, tutoring mostly middle and high school students, and teaching my own children. I've been told that I am patient, creative and good at explaining concepts. Other teaching-related jobs I've had include substitute teaching (many ages and subjects), Sunday school teaching, therapy for a boy with autism, and helping with vacation Bible clubs both in the U.S. and the U.K.

I have called the Washington, D.C. area "home" for over ten years, and previously lived in California, Nigeria, Illinois, Great Britain, Israel and Jordan. I have appreciated all the states and countries that have hosted me, and I continue to enjoy meeting people from around the world. That's one of the aspects of metro D.C. that I value the most! Other interests of mine (besides math, teaching and travel) include music (especially choral singing), reading (aloud to my family and by myself), spending time outside on walks or playing Frisbee, and visiting my far-flung family.

I look forward to meeting your student.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I'm a certified math teacher, who has tutored students in algebra for over 10 years. In addition, I have the equivalent of a math minor from Wheaton College.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I'm a certified math teacher, who has tutored students in algebra II for a few years. In addition, I have the equivalent of a math minor from Wheaton College (except for the computer science courses they required). Math was my strongest subject when I was in school and I love to help others understand it better!
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a BA in elementary education from Wheaton College, as well as Illinois teacher certification for grades K-8. I spent 2 years substitute teaching, which included all elementary grades. I also have spent the past 8 years home-schooling my own 3 elementary-aged children (ages 8, 11, and 12).
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I'm a certified elementary teacher, with specializations in math and English. I've also home-schooled my own 3 (elementary, middle-school, and high-school) children for the past 11 years. I love math and helping kids understand the important foundations at a young age.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I am an elementary school teacher, as well as a home-schooling mom, with years of experience in teaching science in a hands-on way. I include reading, writing and math in my science lessons, but also find it invaluable to have real-life experiences with my students. Sometimes that looks like an experiment; other times it looks like a nature walk. Science comes alive when we use our five senses to explore the world around us.
English

English

My formal qualification is that I have a degree in teaching, with a specialty in English. But my informal qualification is that I have always loved words and been told that I'm quite good at using them. I love to read and am a firm believer that reading quality literature contributes in so many ways to one's ideas, skills, and maturity.
Geometry

Geometry

I'm a certified math teacher, with a math minor from Wheaton College and over 5 years' experience in tutoring geometry students. It's one of my favorite areas of math.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I'm a certified math teacher, who has tutored students in prealgebra for over 10 years. In addition, I have the equivalent of a math minor from Wheaton College. Since prealgebra is critical to future math classes, I take it very seriously. I do my best to keep the learning as practical and hands-on as possible, using word problems, pictures, and topics of interest to the student.
PSAT

PSAT

I have three years of experience helping students with test-taking skills. I also have a math teaching certification to help students review all of the math needed on the PSAT.
Reading

Reading

I am a certified teacher, specializing in math and English, as well as a home-schooling mom with years of experience in teaching reading. For the beginning reader, I combine repetitious practice with fun activities like the memory game. For older readers, I strongly believe that learning will best occur when we're reading something we enjoy. Yet I strive to introduce my students to the best writing available. I have no time for mediocrity. Finally, for all readers, I advocate reading aloud (and being read to). This is one of my family's favorite activities.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I'm a certified math teacher, who got a 760 on my SAT math test. In addition, I have the equivalent of a math minor from Wheaton College. I have tutored SAT math for over 5 years, using SAT preparation books and discussing test-taking strategies.
Spelling

Spelling

I have worked on spelling with my home-schooled children for the past 5 years. I use "Spelling Power" to tailor lists to an individual's level. I also use many fun hands-on activities to help correct spellings become second-nature. One of my own children has mild dyslexia, but we've been able to improve her spelling hugely in the past 2 years.
Writing

Writing

My formal qualification is that I have a degree in teaching, with a specialty in English. But my informal qualification is that I have always loved words and been told that I'm quite good at using them. I love to read and am a firm believer that the reading of good writing contributes greatly to becoming a good writer. I also currently home-school my three children and work with them daily on the art of writing. My goal is to help students reach the point where they can pinpoint problem areas in their own writing and figure out how to improve. This is a process! But even early on, it's the approach that I take.

Great tutor

Lisa has worked with two of our children (elementary and high school age) and we have been very pleased with her depth of knowledge on the subjects. Both our children have benefited positively from working with Lisa. We would not hesitate to recommend her for tutoring needs.

Knowledgeable, patient, excellent tutor

My daughter was very pleased getting help from Lisa for her Algebra 1 honors class. She has greatly improved her ability to graph lines, as well as being able to do them faster. Now I know I can count on Lisa when my daughter needs help in math, and I would highly recommend her for tutoring purpose.

Great improvement , Thank you

I have a kindergarten child who needs extra help with her reading and I am so lucky to come across my child tutor Mrs. Lisa. My child spent the last six months with her once a week for an hour and the improvement I saw my child was so great. She can read her books by herself now and she develops interest in reading with out my push. I really appreciate her for the contribution she did to my child's academic.Thank you
