My name is David B but most of my previous students called me Mr. David. I am here primarily because of my son. He is now 18, but when diagnosed with Autism and later an Intellectual Disability, it motivated me (also later diagnosed with ASD) to learn all I could about the educational options for my son. My passion for helping him grow and learn, led me to go back to school and earn my Virginia Teaching license and a Master of Science in Special Education K-12 from Radford University, summa cum laude (4.0 GPA). I had previously completed a Bachelor's of Business Administration from King University in Bristol, TN.

I have 6 1/2 years of teaching experience in special education and 8 1/2 years of working one on one with students in education. I primarily worked with Kindergarten, first grade and second grade during that time. However, I have worked with 5th grade specifically and a few kids in 3rd and 4th. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to provide virtual synchronous as well as virtual asynchronous instruction. I enjoyed the flexibility it provided and while it was certainly not a fit for some students, I was proud of the progress that many of my students made during that time. I tend to follow the say, show, do model for younger learners. I also enjoy finding common, everyday situations, items & connections (to that student) to use in instruction. During my time teaching I have had considerable experience teaching 1 on 1, teaching small groups, pushing in to general education classes as well as co-teaching with general education teachers in a co-taught environment.

I'm looking forward to helping your child succeed and learn! Please contact me if you have questions, or to schedule a lesson!

ADHD

ADHD

I have been a special education teacher and case manager for approximately 50-60 students with ADHD over the course of 6 1/2 years of teaching and co-teaching. During that time, I wrote many IEPs, behavior plans and lesson plans for students with ADHD. Additionally, I have some experience providing synchronous and asynchronous instruction with ADHD students virtually.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I was diagnosed with ASD in 2021 and my son was diagnosed with ASD in 2010, so this has always been an area close to my heart. I have been a special education teacher and case manager for approximately 40-50 students with ASD over the course of 6 1/2 years of teaching and co-teaching. During that time, I wrote many IEPs, behavior plans and lesson plans for students with ASD. Additionally, I have some experience providing synchronous and asynchronous instruction with ASD students virtually.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a special education teacher and case manager for approximately 20-25 students per year over the course of 6 1/2 years of teaching and co-teaching. All of that time was spent in elementary (K-6th). I have worked most extensively with Kindergarten, First and Second grade, but have a familiarity throughout the elementary level. During that time, I worked more with students who had disabilities. However, I worked 3 years within a co-taught environment as well. This allowed me to work with students of many abilities and disabilities, growing as an educator in the process. Additionally, I have some experience providing synchronous and asynchronous instruction with students virtually.
