I am a friendly, patient experienced tutor and teacher. As a degreed and experienced designer and college professor, I'm always excited to share my knowledge with my students. I teach the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) Mac computer basics, concepts and principals of design, Microsoft Powerpoint and Word, and social media marketing. I am a social media consultant for a magazine and can help teach how to leverage social media for your business.

My goal for...

I am a friendly, patient experienced tutor and teacher. As a degreed and experienced designer and college professor, I'm always excited to share my knowledge with my students. I teach the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign) Mac computer basics, concepts and principals of design, Microsoft Powerpoint and Word, and social media marketing. I am a social media consultant for a magazine and can help teach how to leverage social media for your business.

My goal for students is to improve proficiency with software and teach design basics so whatever your creative endeavors, you will have a deeper understanding of design to improve any of your creative projects. I believe that anyone can learn the basics to create better results and I truly believe that everyone has a talent that can be tapped!

Learning how to use your tools is key; computer design, a digital camera and a sketchbook are tools you may use, but need help with.

Lessons includes a variety of exercises designed to help you develop your skills and are completely unique to your level of knowledge and goals. I can teach the basics or enhance skills for the experienced. I am confident you will learn and enjoy the process.

There is a great deal to learn in Illustrator so learning the student's need is essential to their success. I have studied both traditional art history as well as a history of visual communication through art. From the earliest cultures, Egyptian, Babylonian and Greek to today's post modern era, I have the knowledge and passion to tutor students of any age or knowledge level. All you need to learn is an interest in art history. With the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, we have a great "laboratory" in which to study, along with the many private and public galleries.

I loved and "aced" college coursework in art theory, art history and the history of visual communications and art philosophy. I have continued to study, research and discuss art theory in an effort to learn more and stay informed.

I have been drawing all my life and chose visual art as my college major. I am an observational artist, which means I draw from life. Subjects are anything that catches my attention and that I can sit and observe. I may take reference photographs but drawing from a photo gives a different result than drawing from life. Preferred drawing medium is a simple pencil. Using a variety of leads from very soft to hard a number of effects can be achieved, dark shadows and soft textures and everything in between. My first year in college I won first place in an art show for a drawing done in charcoal. Charcoal is a forgiving medium that even beginners can master. Color pencils, pen and ink are two other great drawing tools, but both require practice to achieve a good result. I am passionate about teaching students the importance of using the right tools for the job and the importance of using quality materials to create art they can be proud of.

Courses are geared toward new students and include the basics of oil painting, which include what colors to purchase, selecting a canvas or painting surface, basic color theory, and best practices for safe use of paints and chemicals. Prior painting experience is not necessary but basic drawing skills are beneficial.
