Hello! My name is Ava, and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia studying Government and Sociology. I am passionate about working 1-on-1 with students to help them reach their full potential and develop confidence. I am equipped to tutor elementary, middle, and high school students in a range of subjects. In high school, I took rigorous courses, earning a 4.7 GPA and 5s on AP Calculus BC, US Government, Environmental Science, Human Geography, and Language and Composition. One of my strongest skills is connecting with people of all ages and abilities, and I believe that learning is most successful when it is built on a positive relationship.

My tutoring journey began through volunteering with a local nonprofit during the pandemic, an experience that made me realize how much I love helping children thrive academically and serving as a mentor. I continued to tutor throughout high school, gaining experience with students of all grade levels, even those older than me. I have extensive experience working with students with intellectual and developmental disabilities through both full-time employment and volunteering. I am deeply passionate about helping children with any ability succeed in school, and I recognize that success means something different to every family.

My teaching method adapts to each student's needs and goals, and I focus on empowering students to work through problems thoroughly using the Socratic method. This looks like working through the same type of problem several times, with decreasing support until the student has mastered the how, not just the what. When a student is struggling with a concept, I first ask how best to support them and offer several alternatives, such as visual aids, breaking processes down into manageable steps, and real-world examples.

I seek to be approachable and flexible for all students and parents, and I deeply value open and honest communication. I would love to work with you to help your student thrive and find joy in learning!
