Hi! I've been a teacher and test prep coach for over 15 years, and I love what I do. There are a few reasons why I have such high success rates helping students improve dramatically, from high school to grad school:

* I'm flexible, warm, and adaptive to your needs. I enjoy learning how people think and what will help them most. I've worked with students who need to start from scratch on SAT and ACT math, reading, writing, or science skills -- and students who want to earn prestigious scholarships. I'll help AP Gov students to earn a 5, or work to help you fill in areas of basic understanding. I've worked with prospective grad students at every level looking to boost their LSAT scores and write personal statements that showcase their best selves. Doing it all with a sense of humor and joy is key!

* I've got a rare and detailed level of skill and experience. In high school, I earned a perfect score on the SAT and went to college as a National Merit Scholar. In college, I began tutoring test prep while studying English and Politics. After earning an LSAT score in the upper-99th percentile, I studied constitutional law at the University of Virginia. Then I fell in love with teaching! Although I still do some legal work on the side, my heart is in the classroom, teaching AP Government and Criminal Law to high-schoolers for well over a decade. I've been National Board Certified, and I've continued to tutor over the years -- because as much as I love the classroom, there's something truly fulfilling about helping people 1-on-1.

* When it comes to test prep, I know a few tricks that other tutors miss. Some of them might seem obvious -- you can try them on your own! -- but over and over again, I find they work. Two of the biggest tricks: (1) Never ignore correct answers. Some of the best growth I've seen is after asking students about why they got a question RIGHT. (2) Cement new skills right away. I always provide new examples of a skill we learn, so students gain confidence in what they know.

Approved Subjects

ACT English

ACT English

I've found that many students -- even advanced readers -- need extra preparation to succeed on the ACT English section. Questions about grammar, usage, and organization are new to many. My experience as an English major, writing coach, and teacher (and language background in Latin and German) have helped students to understand and succeed on this part of the test.
ACT Math

ACT Math

Over the years, I've found that when we work together consistently, my students achieve remarkable gains. I work with a broad range of goals: Some students need to nail down concepts like fractions and percentages, and our one-on-one work opens new doors. Others are advanced in math and want to learn techniques to speed up their response time -- so that they can show their abilities to the most selective schools.
ACT Reading

ACT Reading

I work with students in a way that is tailored to their needs. Some are working to increase their reading speed and comprehension. Others want to build vocabulary or learn strategies for specific question types. From struggling readers to advanced scholars looking to gain admission to highly selective schools, my students see significant gains -- and that makes coaching a joy.
ACT Science

ACT Science

The ACT Science section is -- perhaps surprisingly -- only partly about science. To a greater degree, it's a test of reading comprehension and logical thinking. When I work with students, I often find that this is the section where the greatest improvements can be made. Many benefit from a deep dive into the types of passages and questions the ACT offers. I work to strengthen the skills of my students, and to hone strategies for finding fast and accurate answers.
Bar Exam

Bar Exam

As an experienced test prep coach and teacher of law, I can help you prepare for the bar. For over a decade, I've taught two subjects essential for the Multistate Bar Exam: Constitutional Law & Criminal Law & Procedure. My government and criminal law students know that I'm thorough and creative in my approach, and grounded in the essentials you need for the MBE. I have years of experience training students in legal writing, as well; I'm happy to help you hone your essay skills.
Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice

In my criminal law classes, we focus on: criminal law and procedure, constitutional rights, important questions of justice, the elements of a trial, and how common law has been adapted in the modern era. When I tutor, I'm happy to focus on the areas of criminal justice that are most important to my students.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I enjoy working with high school students who are preparing for the AP Government exam -- I've seen great success, and my students earn top scores at two-and-a-half times the national average. I've attended three workshops on the AP Gov exam. As a Politics major who went on to earn a law degree with a focus on the U.S. Constitution, I'm also happy to work with college and grad students in more advanced studies.
Law

Law

I've been teaching law and government for over 15 years, and I'm licensed to practice law in the state of Virginia. I'm happy to work with you on a broad range of legal concepts.
Legal Writing

Legal Writing

I work with students on legal writing in a number of contexts, training them in the IRAC method so that they can clearly and logically defend their positions. For 15 years, I helped my Criminal Law students prepare for Mock Trial. I've worked with students from middle school to law school as they write and argue in Moot Court competitions. And I bring years of expertise to help people as they hone their content knowledge and skills, coaching writing for the Bar Exam and the Argumentative Writing section of the LSAT.
Logic

Logic

I've taught the foundations of logical reasoning to students for over 15 years. My focus is in preparing students for the LSAT and for law school. Before that, I took courses in Logical Reasoning, Symbolic Logic, and Mathematical Logic. I find the subject fascinating, and I enjoy making it understandable for my students.
LSAT

LSAT

I've enjoyed working with students on all sections of the LSAT, helping them with everything from logical reasoning in general to specific question types. We find an approach to reading comprehension that's the best fit for you, and we explore the different types of arguments that often stump test-takers.
PSAT

PSAT

The PSAT can open doors for students who want recognition and scholarships as they apply for college. It's also great practice for the SAT! I've worked with students who have a broad range of goals. Sometimes, I've built up their math or reading skills from a beginning level. On other occasions, I've honed their skills to help them earn National Merit Scholarships!

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I'd love to help build your vocabulary! Success here comes not just from learning words with flashcards, but by using them in conversation and writing. Building your vocabulary pays off, whether you are new to English, preparing for a standardized test, applying to colleges, or simply interested in exploring the world of words.

Excellent help on law school application essays

Allen was incredibly helpful with my law school application essays. He quickly understood exactly what I was looking for and helped me cut down my word count while keeping the strongest parts of my writing. He’s also super friendly and approachable, and he genuinely wants you to learn and improve throughout the process. I really enjoyed working with him!
