Hello! I am a retired high school AP English Language and Composition teacher. I developed the AP English Language program at Charlottesville High School and served as the academic competition team and newspaper sponsor, as well as department chairperson, during my tenure. I have taught at Piedmont Virginia Community College as well. In addition, I am a College Board consultant for AP English Language and Composition and have taught both new and experienced teachers at AP Summer Institutes for the past two decades. I have extensive training in the new essay rubrics and Course and Exam Description for AP English Language. Currently, I am a part-time application reader for the University of Virginia Undergraduate Admissions Department. I also have copy editing experience and have extensive experience in creating content for several major textbook publishers (both in editing, development of multiple choice questions, and crafting teacher manuals for AP English Language textbooks).
I am interested in helping students improve their college essays, tweak their writing, and hone their editing skills. I am also a strong, capable proofreader and enjoy reading theses and dissertations on any topics. I prefer working with high school, college, and graduate students, but I would also consider tutoring middle school students. I look forward to working with you!

I know what teachers are looking for. I understand the concept of audience. I have strong attention to detail. I hold a double major in English and philosophy and a master of arts degree in English language and literature. This combination of both educational credentials and extensive training/experience in undergraduate admissions gives me a unique perspective. Working with the school newspaper for almost 30 years has given me lots of practice in proofreading as well!

Exceptional Teaching

We are beyond grateful for your guidance and support! Thanks to your exceptional teaching, our daughter earned 5 on AP English Writing!! Her improvement in writing, especially in both skills and confidence, was truly remarkable. You consistently provided encouragement when she doubted herself, helping her rebuild confidence and stay focused. Your positivity made a huge difference in her learning journey. We feel incredibly lucky to have had you as her tutor and mentor!!

Knowledgeable and encouraging tutor

In one session, Patricia motivated our son, who was completely discouraged by his AP English teacher. She is extremely qualified and knows exactly how the college board grades the essays since she was a grader. She was able to point out the key lines of my son's essay which met the rubric and answered his questions in a clear and concise manner, all in an encouraging way. She also provided guidance for the second type of essay, motivating him to want to work on it in preparation for his next lesson. After the lesson, he told me that he has confidence that Patricia will be able to help him succeed.

Strongly Recommended AP English Tutor!

Patty worked with my daughter during AP English Lang this year, and my daughter ended up earning a 5 on the test! Patty deeply understands the curriculum, rubrics, and writing expectations of the AP readers, and was an excellent tutor to my daughter. My daughter really liked her English teacher at school, but he didn't assign a lot of essays, and typically took an extremely long time to return the graded essays which meant feedback to help her improve her writing was slow. Patty worked with my daughter to discuss my daughter's plan to approaching specific assignments and she was an excellent reviewer giving her helpful feedback about her writing. Patty was specific about where there were gaps compared to the AP standards. She also assigned my daughter extra practice essays for writing types that weren't covered deeply in class, and then graded them by the AP rubric to help her know where to focus on improving. Patty is very empathetic and patient, knows the AP Lang curriculum and rubric, and my daughter felt very comfortable working with her. I give Patty my strongest recommendation!

knowledgable and passionate tutor

I was looking for a tutor with an AP English teacher experience in a real school setting. I am glad to find Patricia and she worked with my son on an Honor English essay assignment. She came to the lesson with knowledge about the materials, helped analyze the passage, and organized the idea. I recommend Patricia. Thank you!
