Hey there, I'm Gabriel Yu! I just graduated with an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. Before this, I did my undergraduate degree at George Mason University, where I earned a BA in Global Affairs with a minor in Political Philosophy. In between, I tutored for 7 months at C2 Education, where I helped students work on SAT prep, coursework in social studies and language arts (including AP courses and exams), and college prep and essays for rising seniors. Most of my students were high school-aged but I also helped middle school students improve their reading and writing skills.
I myself am a passionate reader and writer, and as a tutor one of my prime goals is to instill in my students a greater interest in reading and confidence in writing. As important as our education system is, it can oftentimes leave students feeling jaded by academic work. To combat this, I want my students to become more confident in expressing themselves and think about what they're passionate about. Improving grades is always crucial, but better grades should reflect a sincere ability to think and engage with the actual stuff they're learning.
My instruction approach is modeled after C2 Education's, which emphasizes a holistic appreciation of each student's profile, such as their strengths, weaknesses, interests, extracurriculars, and learning styles. This is so that my students can better understand how their academic work connects with their overall life goals and identity. If you're interested in working with me, feel free to send a message with a short description of your or your child's needs. I will usually respond within 6 hours on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends.
