Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a Fairfax County Public School elementary teacher for six years. I have a BA in Elementary Education. I also have a MA in Teaching.

English

I received my teaching certification while double-majoring in Hispanic Studies and Elementary Education. I earned my Master's in the Art of Teaching shortly thereafter. Currently, I serve as a high school outreach ambassador for an educational consulting group that specializes in higher education. My oral and written communication skills are excellent and my rapport with students and parents has always proved exceptional.

Over time, I have built an arsenal of communication and instructional strategies that I access daily in order to maximize every tutoring session that I run. I am focused, yet flexible, and will do all that I can to help a student realize his or her full potential. I am committed to my students' success.

Reading

Working as an Advanced Academics teacher in Fairfax, Virginia, I used my training to foster a love of reading in students, while assisting them in increasing their fluency, comprehension, and appreciation for the author's craft. I have been trained in guided reading instruction and the Literacy Collaborative program.

SOL

As a graduate of the Fairfax County Public School system, and having been a teacher in the county, I am very comfortable and familiar with the Virginia State SOLS. In the past, I have helped my students prepare for the SOL exams by presenting engaging lessons and using interactive notebooks. I work hard to help students retain important information and recall essential vocabulary.

Spanish

I hold a BA in Hispanic Studies. I spent a summer taking Spanish classes in Morelia, Mexico in 2002 and another summer taking Spanish classes in Cadiz, Spain in 2003.

Study Skills

With more than ten years of experience in the education field, I have met and worked with a slew of different students. My compassionate nature and willingness to go the extra mile has always proved beneficial to my clients.

I work closely with students, getting to know their strengths and weaknesses, so that we can draft an effective plan of action and tackle each class/paper/project most efficiently.

I am reflective and take time before and after tutoring sessions to reflect on a student's individual needs. I often create instructional aids and supplemental activities for my students.

Writing

I have spent almost ten years tutoring high school students in their English and Literature classes.
