Hi, my name is Caleb Charpentier, and I am a PhD Candidate in Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech.
I completed my BS in Biology at Southeastern Louisiana University in 2022, with a minor in Computer Science. My current research involves developing AI tools that can improve the way we understand the evolution of morphological traits over macroevolutionary time.

In the past, I've privately tutored over 100 students from the elementary school to graduate school levels. Additionally, I've taught over 150 students in Intro Bio labs at Virginia Tech, and have mentored undergraduates who worked with my lab in the past.

My programming experience is mostly in R and Python. I am the primary developer on the R package Revticulate, which integrates R with the Bayesian phylogenetics program RevBayes, and am also a contributor to the RPhenoscate package, which uses organismal trait ontologies to improve the nuance and predictive abilities of certain phylogenetic comparative methods.

For Python, I am the primary developer of TraitBlender (a pipeline for simulating museum-specimen style images of synthetic organisms to assess computer vision tools), and have contributed to an ecology and evolution oriented deep learning package called BioEncoder and the bioinformatics pipeline SISRS.

I mostly tutor for programming and biology. These subjects can often be very overwhelming for people who are new to them, as they most require not only lots of memorization but also understand how complex systems work and interact with each other. As a tutor, my goal is to make these complex ideas simple, but breaking them down in smaller components can that are easier for students to understand and apply themselves.

Data Science

Data Science

I'm a Ph.D. student at Virginia Tech, and my research involves developing interpretable deep-learning methods for evolutionary biology. My research heavily relies on using Python and R for scientific analysis. Concerning Python, I primarily work with PyTorch, and I'm very familiar with Python's data science suite including Pandas, Matplotlib, Numpy, scikit-learn, and others. I'm a contributor to SISRS, a Python-based bioinformatics pipeline for extracting phylogenetically informative regions from whole-genome sequences, and I enjoy helping out with problems in scientific and statistical domains. As far as R goes, I've developed and contributed to several R packages, including 'Revticulate' (a package for interfacing with the Bayesian phylogenetics program 'RevBayes') and RPhenoscate (a package for incorporating ontological knowledge with evolutionary data). I'm very familiar with the tidyverse, and I enjoy helping students learn to clean data with dplyr and beautiful visualizations with ggplot2.

Data Analytics R Studio

Caleb was extremely patient and took the time to explain things I did not have to know. I definitely will use him again for R-Studio or any subject he is versed in.

Novella, 5 lessons with Caleb

Knowledgable, helpful and patient

Great tutor, highly knowledgable on R programming and very helpful to have an R tutorial connecting programming to biological insight. Caleb was very patient for a complete beginner, such as myself, and I highly recommend him!

Very knowledgeable and helpful

Title says it all, very good tutor. Knows how to troubleshoot and fix any problems we encountered. Five star rating.

Sander, 4 lessons with Caleb

Knowledgeable and patient

Walked me through some shortcuts and other tools in R studio that I was unaware of and also helped me navigate some of the Statistic based studies in my lab. Would strongly recommend for help with any thing coding or statistics related.

Awesome dude

Went over looping, extracting data from data sets, and understanding the broad scope of R. Beyond his expertise, I enjoyed his ability to teach complex topics in bit sized pieces. Look forward to the next session.

First session w Caleb

He is so patient!! I had no idea what I was doing in my r class but after our session I felt so much more confident. He explained the material in a way that I could understand which I absolutely needed. I will be booking with him again this semester. Recommend x 10000.
