I have a bachelor's and master's degree in animal science and a graduate certificate in applied statistics all from Virginia Tech as well. I am a PhD student at Virginia Tech working in the biology and statistics departments. I have a bachelor's and master's degree in animal science and a graduate certificate in applied statistics all from Virginia Tech as well. I am working on a PhD in biology and a master's in applied statistics. In addition, I have several years of hands on experience in the veterinary field and about two years of statistical consulting experience.

I am excited about animal physiology and disease states (this is actually what my PhD research is based on) and equally as excited about DOING statistics in the most ethical and responsible way possible. Given my interests, the ideal student for me is one who needs some help and maybe a little motivation to enjoy learning about statistics or physiology (human or animal is fine :) ). I also love to work with students who may need help with applied statistical analysis for a class project or research project. I have expertise in linear and generalized linear mixed models, time series analysis, and biostatistics and I do not need the project to be based in my preferred fields to help!

Additionally, if you are seeking help with applying to college, graduate school, or professional school (esp. vet school), I would be thrilled to help you with those processes and applications. Let me help you put your best foot forward and find a program that is right for you! At this point in my career, I have been through *all* the chaos of program searching and applying.

I have mentored students at all levels, from elementary school through graduate/ professional school and non-traditional adult learners. I have been tutoring for nearly 10 years (WOAH where did that time go?), and I am motivated and driven by student success stories. Reach out today for a free consultation/ first lesson to see if we are a good fit!

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have taken math through Calculus I and received A's in all of my math classes. I have experience tutoring a 10th grader in this subject with very good success (she went from and F to a C and passed her standardized test.)
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have taken general chemistry in high school and college and received an A in both classes. My experience tutoring students currently only includes friends who I have helped with homework and lab reports. However, I feel very confident in my abilities to help others understand chemistry.
Soccer

Soccer

I have played soccer since age 5. I played recreational soccer, as well as four years of travel experience and two more years of high-level travel experience. I played one semester for a division III college. I also have experience coaching U10-U14 players (boys and girls). I also currently hold my F license to coach.
Spanish

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for 6 years total. Four of those years were in high school and two more in college. I have experience acting as an informal medical translator and as the only provider of a Spanish education to a middle school student who was home schooled. My method is to teach from the ground up. I like to provide the student initially with some key phrases so that they can communicate at a very basic level and then build on the vocabulary and grammar beginning with the present tense and progressing through more complex tenses and grammar points.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I am a sophomore in college and I currently have a 4.0 and I ended high school with a 4.6 out of 4.3 (we have added weight for more difficult classes at my school). I have been successful in studying myself and helping others in my classes to improve their study skills. While I have no formal experience teaching study skills as a whole, I have worked with several classmates to help them find ways of studying and organizing themselves to best meet their goals.

Patient, prepared and reassuring!

Alicia is so patient and clearly puts a lot of energy in preparing lessons ahead of time (not all tutors do this!). I’ve found many tutors super intimidating but she has a very calming, non-judgmental presence that makes me feel comfortable asking questions. I do hope she becomes a professor as she’s great at breaking things down!

Great tutor

My daughter was very happy and very appreciative of her. She said Alicia would explain and walk through each problem she needed help with. Thank you--you're a life saver.

Very fun and helpful!!

I had my first lesson with her and I love the way she explained things to me. She has a very good way of explaining confusing concepts and she helped me understand a whole chemistry topic in an hour! She’s the bomb.com. :)

Great First Lesson

I had my first lesson and it went very well. We discussed my goals and where I felt I would need the most work. We then jumped right into verbs and she left me with some good items to start studying. Alicia is very easy to talk to and made me feel comfortable despite being an adult starting from the beginning. I'm looking forward to continuing my lessons with her.
