UC Santa Barbara (physics)
Virginia Tech, Mechanical Engineering (PhD)
Math, Physics and Engineering are my main areas and I have a solid record of success helping students as a tutor. Most have improved by two grade points. Recently, I earned a doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech and won an award from ASME for my dissertation work. I am patient, easy going and enjoy helping students succeed. My experience includes having had the privilege to teach a number of ME classes as an instructor at Tech including Thermodynamics, System Dynamics, Heat Transfer and Thermofluids.
Over my eight years of experience as a tutor, I have found that the path to best results is to help the student with strategies for thinking and problem solving. An important aspect of this is to help the student to break down the subject at hand into simpler concepts, which in turn enables the student to better grasp ideas and work practice problems. With my knowledge and experience, I am able to lead the student to an understanding of the main concepts and techniques of a challenging topic, while helping the student avoid the pitfalls.

I highly recommend Charles to any student needing help in Engineering . My grades have improved in the short time I have been working with him. He is very patient and flexible with meeting times. He explains/breaks down difficult concepts so they are easy to understand. He extremely knowledgeable of all facets of engineering and has been instrumental in getting me through programming and MATLAB.
Thanks Christine, I am glad I could help!
He reviewed some past concepts with me, including cylindrical shells and cross-sectional areas. It was helpful to talk through the concepts since they had confused me prior to our lesson.
Abby, Thanks for your kind words.
Charles has an extensive knowledge of the subject, gives a clear and concise explanation of the problems and answers questions until the subject matter is fully understood. Charles has been extremely reliable, and goes above and beyond to provide any help before an exam.
He has taught me multiple different levels of calculus and dynamics. He knows the material very well and is very good at teaching it.
Thanks Mitch, for your recommendation. I have enjoyed very much working with you!
Charles is doing a nice job getting my son familiar with Matlab and preparing him for future classes - thank you!
Thank you Steve. I really appreciate it!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My work in Mechanical Engineering requires extensive use of algebra at every turn. I have years of experience successfully tutoring junior high, high school and college students in this subject.
Mechanical Engineering requires extensive use of algebra. I have years of experience successfully tutoring junior high, high school and college students in all possible variations of algebra topics. My degrees are in Mechanical Engineering and Physics.
I have worked extensively with C as a software engineer in Silicon Valley California. I enjoy using this language and have a lot of experience using it and with programming in general.
Calculus is a favorite subject of mine. I have had a lot of success tutoring students in this subject. Recent high school students of mine have gotten 5's on their AP calculus exams. I am proud of them! College students are often my clients as well, especially those taking multi-variable and vector calculus.
My work has focused very intensively on the use of computer programming methods on almost a daily basis. I feel I have a good grasp on systematic design methods and for what makes good software design. I would be glad to share my experience with students in this area.
My work in Mechanical Engineering requires extensive use of differential equations. I have a lot of experience in the formulation and solution of differential equations in my dissertation work using closed form and numerical techniques. I have extensive experience tutoring this subject.
My mathematics background has involved the extensive use of linear algebra in the solution of problems in finite elements analysis, quantum mechanics and general engineering. I have successfully helped a number of students get top grades this subject. I look forward to sharing this knowledge with perspective students.
Much of my recent work, including as a college instructor, has involved writing programs using Matlab, which I enjoy using very much. I am knowledgeable about the language itself and many of the various aspects of software development including program design, numerical algorithms, graphics and troubleshooting. I am glad to help students to get up to speed with Matlab!
My recent doctorate is in the area of ME. I have had the privilege of teaching several upper division college courses at Virginia Tech covering a range of topics that include system dynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. I would look forward to helping students in any of these areas.
As a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics is at the heart of my everyday work. I am glad to teach concepts anywhere from Physics 101 to Quantum Mechanics.
I have a bachelor's degree in this subject from UC Santa Barbara. Physics is a topic that I personally find fascinating and I enjoy helping students to understand this area of science.
I have successfully tutored numerous students in SAT math using my own experience and the ETS manuals that are available. When I was a student, I myself took a course from a prominent test prep company and was able to score 1420 out of 1600 in math and English, with a score of 750 in the math section. I am very familiar with the techniques that are used by these test prep firms.
Statistics is one of the topics a lot of science majors encounter, myself included. In my work I often utilize statistics concepts in presenting data in scientific papers that I write. Recently, I have had the pleasure of helping a number of students in this area. One student needed a statistics course to get his degree in Geography, but had failed two times previously. He told me he was about ready to give up. With my help he passed the class and got his degree!
As an engineer I use trigonometry all the time and have also helped many students master these skills. Trig is a very important topic to know and is a gateway to understanding higher math. If you are serious about this subject and hire me to help you, you will gain strong competency in this area.
My PhD dissertation as well as my other scientific papers have required the extensive and prolonged exercise of writing skills. Moreover, my writing has been subject to rigorous review by others. I would be glad to aid anyone who needs help with writing, regardless of whether it is technical in nature or not.
