I am Royford, and I recently finished my PhD in Computer Science at Virginia Tech. My academic background includes strong foundations in both mathematics and computer science, and I earned A+ grades in Calculus I and II, as well as in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. I have also served as a teaching assistant for courses such as Data Structures and Algorithms and have experience teaching Computer Systems at Virginia Tech. I enjoy helping students understand challenging material and would bring an interactive and supportive approach to tutoring.

I have experience teaching Computer Systems at Virginia Tech to classes of more than 50 undergraduate students, covering topics such as operating systems, C programming, and computer networks. In my teaching, I have used a combination of slides, whiteboards, and an iPad to walk students through problems and procedures step by step. I find this approach especially effective for subjects such as calculus and discrete mathematics, where students often benefit from seeing how a proof, derivation, or algorithm develops from one step to the next. For online instruction, I use tools such as the Zoom whiteboard to provide the same interactive experience. In the classroom, I also try to maintain eye contact with students and ask questions throughout the lesson to make sure they remain engaged rather than simply listening passively. I encourage students to stop me at any time if they have a question or if something is unclear, so that the class remains interactive, comfortable, and focused on genuine understanding.

During my college teaching experience, I received positive feedback from students about both my teaching materials and my approach. One student noted that my personalized PowerPoint slides were more helpful than the pre-made course materials, while another described me as excellent at delivering lectures and always available to answer questions, adding that they wished more students attended my lectures.

Approved Subjects

C++

C++

I hold a PhD in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and have a strong foundation in programming, algorithms, data structures, and computer systems. My teaching experience includes serving as a teaching assistant for Data Structures and Algorithms and teaching undergraduate Computer Systems at Virginia Tech, where I explained complex technical concepts to classes of more than 50 students. I use a practical, step-by-step approach to help students understand C++ programming concepts, including variables, functions, pointers, classes, object-oriented programming, memory management, and debugging. My lessons emphasize hands-on coding exercises, problem-solving, and clear explanations that help students develop confidence and write efficient, reliable C++ programs.
Computer Science

Computer Science

I hold a PhD in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and a master's degree in Computer Science from the same institution, with an academic background spanning mathematics, programming, algorithms, and computer systems. I have served as a teaching assistant for Data Structures and Algorithms and taught Computer Systems to undergraduate classes of more than 50 students, covering operating systems, C programming, and computer networks. My teaching approach combines step-by-step explanations, practical examples, interactive whiteboard demonstrations, and problem-solving exercises to make complex concepts easier to understand. I help students strengthen their foundations in computer science, develop analytical and computational thinking skills, and apply theoretical knowledge to programming assignments, algorithms, and real-world computing problems.
Java

Java

I hold a PhD in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and a master's degree in Computer Science from the same institution, with a strong foundation in programming, algorithms, data structures, and object-oriented design. My teaching experience includes serving as a teaching assistant for Data Structures and Algorithms and teaching undergraduate Computer Systems to classes of more than 50 students at Virginia Tech. I help students understand Java fundamentals, including variables, control structures, methods, arrays, classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, exception handling, and debugging through clear explanations and practical coding exercises. My interactive, step-by-step teaching approach helps students strengthen their problem-solving skills, complete programming assignments with confidence, and develop a deeper understanding of software development principles.
R
