Hello, my name is Declan W and I am an undergraduate student enrolled at Virginia Tech. At Virginia Tech, I am working to get my Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics which I enjoyed since my days in high school largely due to my time tutoring students during my days in the Math Honors Society. When I did tutor a student, the student would give me their work which was either an assignment, quiz or test that they didn't understand or performed poorly on and we would go over it. First, we identified all the wrong answers in the work and then going over such answers one by one. While going over them, I would give the students an opportunity to redo their question on their work to see what they were thinking when they were answering the question on their work at the time. If they still didn't understand, then I would work to give them a detailed explanation of each step as we from the question to the answer. It is evident here that I try to place the student first and myself second because it's not important that I know the techniques to solve the problem, it is more important that the student understands the technique to solve the problem which is why after I do my detailed explanation of how the problem is to be solved, I help create or find practice problems for the student to practice with to make sure they understand the idea of how to solve the problem so they never get that type of problem wrong. This is my approach and method.
Now as a Math Honors Society student before I graduated and came here to Virginia Tech, I had the opportunity to tutor fellow high schoolers in my high school that is C.G. Woodson High School. When tutoring, I would mainly focus on AP Calculus while also tutoring quite a bit of Precalculus or Algebra 2. A tutoring session that I would have was one on one sometimes tutoring more than one student and in that case, it would be two on one at most. These experiences would be in a classroom setting for voluntary purposes. While tutoring for Math Honors Society I had about 15 hours total.
