Hi there! I’m Sue! I have a passion for helping others and have enjoyed working with students in different capacities throughout my professional career. My background is in English instruction and College Counseling, with Master’s degrees in both fields. I also have a decade of combined work experience. I served as a ninth grade English teacher for five years and high school college counselor for four years. Additionally, I privately tutored students in English and assisted them in college essay writing.

As an English instructor, I emphasize the writing process and teach students to communicate effectively through various modes of writing, such as academic essays, projects and presentations, and creative pieces. I model how students can create their own work in these genres by presenting writing samples that teach the necessary framework to follow. With guidance, students can build upon this framework and gain confidence in their writing. I then help students navigate through all steps of the writing process, including brainstorming, organizing and composing ideas, and proofreading/revising until they have created a polished final product.

As a college counselor, I use my English background to help students produce compelling college essays and navigate the college application process. This process can be overwhelming for both students and parents, so I’m available to help with any of the steps involved. In addition to assisting with college essays, I have worked closely with students to complete applications, meet deadlines, create activity resumes, and identify universities that are a good fit for them.

My diverse educational and career background has provided me with a strong foundation to work with students of differing needs. I am able to identify student challenges and utilize varied approaches to connect with and to encourage them as we work together. My passion for teaching and helping others, combined with my extensive experience, gives me the essential qualities of an effective tutor.

I obtained a Master's degree in College Counseling from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999. I then worked as a College Counselor at the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, Maryland for four years. There, I helped students and families navigate through all aspects of the college process, such as finding the colleges that best suited their needs, creating resumes, meeting deadlines, and writing compelling application essays. I also established relationships with the admissions representatives of many highly-selective universities, giving me knowledge of both sides of the application process.

I have a BA degree in English Literature and a Master's degree in English Education and am certified to teach both middle and high school English/Language Arts. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught English to students in grades 7-12, in various levels, including honors, standard, and inclusion classes. As a tutor, I have taught writing and literary analysis to students in middle and high school as well as in college. Passionate about literature and writing, I have decades of combined experience as a student, teacher, and tutor of these content areas and specialize in academic and creative writing. I am able to effectively work with students to strengthen their skills in these disciplines and assist them as they navigate their way through the writing process.

As an English Literature major in college, I explored a wide range of literary works in various genres and time periods. From Medieval literature to American to British and Victorian to contemporary, I delved into and analyzed numerous time pieces within my English major curriculum. Beyond college, I received my Master's degree in English Education, studying to become a secondary English teacher so that I could share my love of literature through teaching writing and literary analysis. After teaching middle and high school English for several years, I decided to continue my teaching of writing and literature as an English and writing tutor. Fostering a love of literature in students and helping them to analyze and understand the meaning and beauty of it is a true passion of mine. In our tutoring sessions, I aim to nurture literary analysis to ensure that students can understand, discuss, and write about literature in a manner that captures the true essence of each literary work they read.

As an English major in college, I developed a strong background in academic writing, bringing with it a critical lens to analyze and proofread texts. My proofreading skills were further enhanced as a result of the completion of two Masters degrees, one in English Education, in which I studied to become a secondary English teacher. For several years, I taught high school English and writing, with a heavy focus on the writing process, including personal editing and revising as well as peer review. Working with students to foster critical reading of literature and writing remains to be an integral component of my tutoring as well. My tutoring work focuses primarily on helping students to navigate the writing process and working with them to write, revise and edit and strengthen their writing. Because I have a strong background in teaching English and writing, I am incredibly qualified to proofread both academic and creative writing. Others seem to think so, as I have served as a Beta reader for two published literary authors and have received countless reviews from parents and students about my ability to use my background and expertise to strengthen their work.

As a high school English teacher for several years, I worked with students to enhance their reading comprehension and textual analysis skills. Exposing students to a variety of genres, we reviewed and discussed various types of literature in class, working together to dissect them to ensure their understanding. I demonstrated how to tackle their reading assignments by providing comprehension and analysis strategies and modeling how to be an active reader. With this guided practice, students learned to both engage with texts and read more confidently as they worked independently.

I have a Master's degree in English Education and taught high school English for several years, with a heavy emphasis on writing instruction. I have also tutored many students and have helped them strengthen and hone their writing skills as they worked on various styles of writing, including academic essays, research papers, projects, and college essays.
