I think the relationship with the student is of primary importance. Creativity and patience are needed on the part of the teacher. I try to treat each student as an individual with specific needs and interests that we can build on. I like to use YouTube and other online sources to connect with students, and provide a variety of resources for each student's needs. I have considerable experience teaching English writing and literature at the undergraduate college level, and teaching professionals who want a higher level of English. I also have experience teaching ESL; the majority of my students are not native English speakers. I have also taught in Egypt, Lebanon and Morocco.
Most importantly, I think learning about language and literature should be fun, with a goal for lifelong curiosity. Most of my students are adults. I prefer not to tutor people for tests, such as the SAT or TOEFL, but to coach them in the English they most need. I think the relationship with the student is of primary importance. Pamela is very knowledgeable, intelligent, organized, patient, encouraging, and thoroughly committed to the best outcome. It is a joy to work with her.
Thanks for the kind words. It's a joy to teach when the student is as motivated as you.
Pam always gives me good advice. She is very patient, understanding my needs and willing to help me in a various aspects. She is not only an English tutor, but also a good consultant for my job.
Prof. N. has been helping me through my masters degree program and has been a tremendous help. Since English is my second language, she has been very helpful in improving my language skills. Since she speaks multiple languages, she is able to understand problems new English speakers encounter. I would highly recommend her for young professionals and students of Masters and PhD programs.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a university prof for more than 30 years. This required me to lecture frequently, often to large groups of students. I also gave lectures to as many as 300 people on a variety of subjects--mostly related to Arab cultures and film. Some of these lectures were PowerPoint; some not. I also taught Public Speaking to extension college students at Augsburg College in St. Paul, MN.
