Hi, I'm Lisa! I'm a Chemistry PhD candidate at Georgetown University with years of experience in chemistry research, teaching, and mentoring undergraduate students. My research focuses on electrochemistry, catalysis, and energy conversion, which has given me a strong foundation in general chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and related topics. I enjoy helping students understand not only how to solve a problem, but also why the chemistry behind it works.
I have close to 10 years of experience teaching and mentoring college students in both classroom and one-on-one settings. In addition to my experience teaching at the college level, I spent a year as a middle school science teacher for 6th and 7th grade and a high school chemistry teacher for 9th grade. This gave me hands-on experience working with younger students in a real classroom environment and taught me how to explain scientific concepts at different levels. As a graduate student, I have worked with students with different levels of chemistry experience and have learned that the same explanation does not work for everyone. I like to break complicated concepts into smaller, intuitive steps, use diagrams and real-world examples when helpful, and work through problems together before having students solve them independently.
My goal as a tutor is to make chemistry feel less intimidating and more logical. Whether a student is struggling with the fundamentals, preparing for an exam, working through homework problems, or trying to strengthen their overall understanding of chemistry, I adapt my approach to their needs and learning style. I want students to leave each session not just with the correct answers, but with the confidence and problem-solving skills to tackle similar questions on their own.
