Hello, I'm Alivia! I started my tutoring experience in high school, where I tutored my peers in English, anatomy/biology, and geometry/algebra. Hello, I'm Alivia! I started my tutoring experience in high school, where I tutored my peers in English, anatomy/biology, and geometry/algebra. I have always made sure to make tutoring a collaborative and communicative experience, making plans with parents and teachers to better understand and appeal to each students individual needs. I've also always asked my students to be straightforward with me in what does and doesn't work for their learning style, and I adjust accordingly. My main goal is to build trust with my students, so that they feel comfortable to communicate their needs and try new things.
I graduated a year early, and cum laude, from The George Washington University with a major in Cognitive Neuroscience and a minor in Biological Sciences. My coursework had a large focus on anatomy, biology, math, and psychology, centered around understanding the biological processes that occur in our brains as we perform cognitive functions such as memory, paying attention, and learning. During my time at GW, I also participated in the Lab of Autism and Developmental Neuroscience, and the GW Social Cognition Lab. I have extensive experience in research, data collection, and scientific writing.
After receiving my undergrad, I worked in special education and general education classrooms as an instructional assistant. I primarily assist middle school children in special education programs in both math and sciences. My ultimate goal is always to encourage confidence in children and use their unique skills to boost their learning. I'm currently enrolled in the University of Virginia's Master of Teaching program in Special Education, working towards my teaching license with an endorsement in special education.
