Taipei City, Taiwan was home before I went to college in Kaohsiung (southern city in Taiwan), attended graduate school in Edinburgh, and moved to the United States. I am a native Chinese speaker and fluent in English. I have always had a passion for language learning and teaching. During college years, I taught private English lessons to children and young adults at different levels. From basic introduction to phonics to rigorous practice for national entrance exam, I established customized teaching plans that bring the best results in my students. After college, I found my first job as a reading teacher at a private English after school program for elementary school students. Through coaching one-on-one sessions with young children in reading English children's books aloud, I tested an effective teaching method that works immensely on helping students to improve their speaking, vocabulary building and grammar structure of a second language.
After moving to DC area, in 2009 I volunteered as a Chinese tutor at the Language Center of George Washington University, and have tutoring experiences helping students with Chinese proficiency exam. It was an exciting and rewarding experience to teach my native language! I am familiar with both Pinying and Bopomofo phonetic systems, and will be able to teach in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters. My teaching principle is to maximize every student's motivation, and turn that motivation into fun yet result-driven language lessons. There is no set curriculum or one best teaching method for every student, only the right approach that is tailored to meet every individual's need. I am experienced with teaching young children and college/graduate students at beginner and intermediate level. Adults and professionals are also welcome for a wide range of subject-based lessons. Whatever your goal might be, I would love to assist you achieve and success and have a positive experience learning about Chinese language and culture.
