Hello! My name is Mary Zambrano and I am a public school English Learner teacher. I have been teaching in public schools for 11 years at the elementary level. The majority of my teaching has been with students of non native English struggling to learn to read. However, I have also taught native English speakers struggling to learn to read as well. I decided to pursue a Masters in Reading and get my Reading Specialist certificate because I knew the public schools were lacking in how we were teaching children to learn to read.
After getting my certificate, I began teaching more students in small group reading instruction using the knowledge I gained about the science of reading. Now most of my day is spent teaching the students who are struggling the most. The key to my success with students is building a strong foundation in phonological and phonemic awareness. I find the most joy out of teaching a child to unlock the world of reading. I’ll never forget the day one of my students told me “I’m not going to sleep tonight because I’m going to be reading this book all night long!”
I believe every student can learn to read even if they have a reading disability. It might take longer or we might have to veer off onto another course than typical students, but we’ll get there together!
I’m excited to work with any student of any age who wants to learn to read.
