Math has always been a subject I genuinely enjoy, and that interest has guided my academic and professional journey. I attended a math and science magnet school in Pittsburgh, which gave me a strong foundation and allowed me to place out of Calculus II when I started college. I later earned a degree in Applied Mathematics and completed Aon’s actuarial student program, where I strengthened my quantitative skills through intensive exam preparation and hands-on analytical work. As an undergraduate, I also served as a Chemistry Coordinator for Northwestern’s Gateway Science Workshop, a peer-led program where upper-level students lead study groups in challenging STEM courses. Working with students in that setting taught me how to explain difficult concepts clearly and support learners with very different levels of confidence and preparation.
Professionally, I spent more than ten years in the actuarial field within employee benefits, where math, modeling, and problem-solving were part of my daily work. I also managed Aon’s summer intern program, teaching actuarial practices and mentoring students as they developed their technical skills. My background includes programming in MATLAB, R, C++, Visual Basic, and SQL, which helps me explain the logic and structure behind mathematical thinking. Throughout my career, I continued tutoring friends’ children in algebra, precalculus, calculus, and SAT math, mostly in one-on-one settings with middle school, high school, and early college students.
As a tutor, I focus on making math clear, manageable, and less intimidating. I use step-by-step explanations so students understand both the methods and the reasoning behind them. I adjust my approach based on each student’s pace and learning style, and I work to create a calm, encouraging environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. My goal is to help students build confidence, strengthen their foundation, and begin to feel capable in a subject that many find overwhelming.
