Hello! Having earned a Bachelor's in English at the University of Connecticut and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Sacred Heart University, and with 10 years of experience teaching in middle school, I am uniquely qualified to tutor in all areas of English Language Arts. I am certified in Virginia to teach both middle school and high school, and currently teach seventh grade English, history, and math. Additionally, I have tutored students one on one in both English and math.

I truly love both teaching and nurturing a joy for learning in my students. I understand that, as a subject, English can often be perceived as confusing or even boring. My approach, then, is to be both as practical and interactive as possible. After assessing a student's ability level and discussing their current needs, I employ a variety of sources and strategies to assist in building their understanding, targeting their specific areas of concern. This process is unique to each student's needs, both flexible and responsive, but generally involves a gradual release of responsibility. This begins with introducing and reviewing a model of the topic/skill, moves to practicing it together while providing plenty of feedback, and finishes with the student working independently. Throughout this process, students are given opportunities for self-assessment, to fully ensure their comprehension of the topic/skill.

I take pride in the fact that, over the course of my career, both the classes I have taught and students I have tutored have consistently shown high levels of growth and achievement on standardized tests. Just as important, though, is that they also gained an appreciation for the subject matter and material, and genuinely enjoyed the work that we did.
