I stumbled into my love of teaching as an EMT and have used my two degrees in biology to build a strong knowledge base to make myself a better resource to my coworkers and students. I have been a field and departmental training officer/lead at both a rescue company and a large 200 patient/day 44 bed suburban ER. With 10 years of first hand experience I believe that a strong understanding of biology and physiology is essential in providing the best hands on patient care. So my lessons in the hospital and on the ambulance always begin with a strong basis in the basic sciences. That is why I feel comfortable teaching not only for EMT students but also highschool and college students looking to not just learn textbook facts but information that we can integrate into a deeper understanding of the body and disease.
I strongly believe in a relaxed informal learning environment where follow up questions and discussion are encouraged. As a tactile and visual learner I include many visual aids and encourage learners to draw, sketch and format their own notes in a way that their brain works best.
I have experience teaching 1 on 1 and classroom style with the following,
Biology: general biology, ecology, microbiology, marine biology, conservation biology, biochemistry, evolutionary biology and genetics.
Physiology: General, cardiovascular, renal, endocrinology, pulmonology, animal physiology, comparative physiology, and of course clinical physiology
EMT Skills: NREMT prep, scene management, patient assessment and care, cross department response integration, infectious outbreak response, cold environment rescue, mass casualty triage, vehicle extrication, US guidance for IV insertion, Cardiac arrest resuscitation (ACLS and beyond), basic EKG interpretation, orthopedic injuries, and much more
