Hello! I'm Balin, an undergraduate studying at James Madison University for an English and Psychology degree. I have both formal and informal tutoring experience: I have previously worked at a well-known tutoring center; and I have spent years after school teaching students Latin and Roman culture with my Latin teacher in preparation for National Junior Classical Convention events, such as a quizbowl and national tests. In these two experiences, I have found both the finesse needed to keep four six year olds under control at the same time and the deep understanding of material needed to help students understand the importance of a book detailing cabbage preparation from two thousand years ago is important.
I believe that receiving tutoring is one of the best things a student can do, as the personalization of lessons and the personal, direct contact with a tutor has been proven not only to increase average test scores and grades, but also to provide a type of learning that a typical classroom cannot. Knowledge in itself is exciting, but when taught in a broad sense to appeal to many students, it may not click for many. However, a tutor can make a student excited to learn, and can transform a dull topic into something special. That excitement, in turn, makes it easy and enjoyable to study. I aim to grow that deeper understanding of a subject, for it is the most valuable thing a student can get out of tutoring.
