About Jon

Bio

I very much enjoy teaching and tutoring and have done a great deal of that. As a tutor, my goal is to help the student learn as much as possible and do their best in the course. Although I know the subject material, the objective is not to hear myself talk, but to communicate the topic to the student. As such, there is no bad (or “dumb”) question. The student is welcome to ask whatever he/she wants.

Although I know the subject material, the objective is not to hear myself talk, but to communicate the topic to the student. As such, there is no bad (or “dumb”) question. The student is welcome to ask whatever he/she wants.

I have tutored students for three years in high school economics, undergraduate introductory and intermediate economics courses, and graduate classes, with high student ratings. This has ranged from tutoring an extremely gifted 12-year old, to undergraduates, and adults returning for their undergraduate or graduate degrees. In addition, as a graduate student I tutored University of Pennsylvania undergraduates and Wharton MBA students in their economics courses.

I taught microeconomics and macroeconomics for two years at LaSalle University, where I was rated highly in students' evaluations. In fact, 25 students petitioned the University that I teach another section of microeconomics one semester, since my existing sections were filled. Also, I taught microeconomics at Drexel University to a class of 60.

At the University of Pennsylvania, I completed all non-dissertation requirements for the PhD in Economics, as well as earning a M.A. in Economics. My B.A. is from Duke University, majoring in political science. In addition, I have professional certifications in Business Valuation and Anti-Money Laundering.

I also possess over 40 years of experience as an economist, having worked for the U.S. government and a large Canadian bank, in addition to university teaching. This includes working on the U.S. macroeconomy, international trade issues, immigration, tax and financial matters, and economic development. I have published several economic policy articles which were well-received.

My background is complemented by my desire to provide students the best service I can.

Public Speaking

Public Speaking

My vast public speaking experience -- for which I have been rated highly -- mainly includes university teaching, but also speaking/presenting before professional groups, in training sessions, and at conferences. In particular, I have led seven U.S. Government delegations at UN meetings abroad and been interviewed on Canadian TV and in a video for 6,000 U.S. Treasury Department staff. In addition, I have worked with, advised, and constructively critiqued others in their public speaking, such as through providing mock interviews and in mentoring sessions, as well as writing and editing others’ speeches and presentations. My proven public speaking experience would enable me to continue to help others in this pursuit.
Writing

Writing

I have decades of diverse writing experience -- which has been rated highly -- including publishing papers which were well-received. This ranges from cover letters, to short policy position statements, to lectures and speeches (given by others and me), detailed reports, and a 132-page review of the research literature. For instance, in my last government position, our director said I was one of our program’s best writers, out of 250 staff. Further, I have substantial experience reviewing and editing others’ write-ups and reports, through my university teaching and supervisory roles.
